If calling to make a complaint at 1-888-BestBuy, SPECIFICALLY request to speak with CONSUMER RELATIONS. Everyone else will give you the run around! Bestbuy will issue you a $50 GC via mail once they verify your receipt for a SINGLE ITEM purchase of $100+.

**I just spoke with the consumer relates dept. and they told me under no circumstances are they allowed to compensate anyone. This directive came down from the big wigs at HQ.** 01/27/13 15:36

Deal is DEAD! Promo was only good for ONE DAY, Monday January 21, MLK Holiday!

Original LINK finally removed from BB servers sometime on 01.23.13

Edit by ReanimationXP, 1/22/13 @ 12:24pm:
Deal is dead officially, but still working provisionally! YMMV.

A correction like this is false advertising! Don't let this one die so easily, SDers!

I just called 1-888-BestBuy and explained that the manager at the Camelback location in Phoenix, AZ was refusing to honor the deal of the printout I had, and warned this could bring about a false advertising lawsuit. She was very nice and helpful. I was trying to buy Amazon gift cards which she could not pull up online (I coudn't either), but she offered to mail me a $100 gift card and only charge me $50 for it. She also double-checked that I would be able to buy an Amazon gift card with my Best Buy giftcard once it comes in. YMMV, good luck!

EDIT: I just mentioned how they took care of the guy below me with the Keurig, and she sent me $150 gift cards for the price of $50 and express shipped them to me without me even asking! This is incredible! They really don't want a lawsuit Smilie

READ the thread for latest info. Some people got denied when using the coupon.

What has been confirmed based on comment in this thread (WITHOUT manager override)
  • Doesn't work on sale items - Not true according to some but Bestbuy forum confirmed this. It is $50 off regular price
  • One Single item must be more than $100 - Not true according to some but Bestbuy forum link in the beginning of Wiki confirmed One item must be at least $100.
  • Doesn't work on GC - Confirmed to exclude gift cards by a Best Buy representative on Facebook, but YMMV

Note from a Slickdealer about gift cards: "Bought the Amazon GCs and manager thought $50 would be statement credit, told me if I did not get statement credit to come back and he would adjust. Did not want to play that game so returned the GCs and got a printer. The manager had to call their support team, and they said that it does not work on any GCs at all. (YMMV of course). It did not take the $50 automatically on the GCs but did on the printer..."
  • Doesn't work on video games - Not true according to some
  • Doesn't work on Kindle Paperwhite WiFi without manager override
  • Doesn't work on Apple TV without manager override
To qualify for the discount, MasterCard must be used on a purchase of $100 or greater. Some people indicate ONE item need to be over $100, but multiple people have gotten it to work with no override on a combined purchase.

Per the facebook page:
Quote :
Hi Amy-

It has to be ANY Mastercard credit card. Mastercard gift cards would not be accepted.

-Jesse-

Pre-paid master cards may no longer work if the manager is in the loop

* I paid CASH... but had a prepaid Walmart MasterCard($3 fee) in hand because after the cashier and manager were done doing the override,
they paid no attention to the $50 bill I handed over.Just rang it up and gave me the receipt. Smilie
I think the reason is that the coupon didn't scan on the 4 $25 Amazon Kindle gift cards
and they had to take off the $50 manually. If the coupon had scanned, it would probably
not accept any other payment except MasterCard. Smilie

If you don't have a Mastercard, purchase a prepaid Mastercard from any store and use it. Read cashier instructions on coupon. Doesn't seem to have exclusions regarding type of Mastercard.

Valencia - purchased multiple blu-rays. bb.com had the LOTR extended blu ray set for $45.99 so price matched plus bought Ted, Sons of Anarchy, Legend and Red Riding Hood. Manager override needed, he came over and knocked down the price of SOA and LOTR to reflect the $50 off. Cashier had issues with the coupon, had to be scanned first but still needed the override to work. paid with best buy card Smilie not mastercard.

Tustin - Wouldn't accept the coupon on multiple items, it had to be over $100 on a single purchase.

Marina - As of 4 pm, my wife was able to snag two Amazon GCs (cashier and manager didn't care). I was able to buy 9 x 16 K-cups, even though the coupon said ONE SINGLE ITEM. The Marina Best Buy is really lax. It's probably because it's in a small town.

Minnesota-
St Cloud - I was able to buy the 24" LG LED HDTV Reg Price $229 SALE price $169-$50 coupon = final price of $119 + tax. I was THRILLED! They were very careful at first to make sure it didn't go against any of the restrictions but went through smoothly. I purchased at about 7:30p.m. Monday though. They weren't going to honor it any other day. There were signs all over the store and on the front doors.

Hello all...longtime lurker here, I guess this debacle brought me out of the woodwork, lol.

I was able to use the original coupon early this evening at a Best Buy in my area. I got a Kindle Paperwhite for $69 and tax, so I'm happy. I struck out on Tuesday at another BBY, and at three different Staples stores. Luckily, I travel around my region for other reasons, so I haven't wasted any gas on this.

To those who missed out on Monday (like me), it might still be worth a try if your not going out of your way. I got the feeling it helped that the Kindle was one item over $100, and that I was the only one in the vicinity of the register. Also, this store did not have signs with the coupon "correction" taped all over the place, so I was able to go get the Kindle and bring it to the register and act surprised when I ran into trouble. I complained for 2-3 minutes (politely), then the manager approved it.

MAJOR difference of decimal error compared to "we meant to have twice as many restrictions on items that qualified, PLUS we meant to have it be for a single item and not just a total purchase, PLUS we didn't actually mean to make this last for six days". That was no mistake, it was just poor planning which they realized too late and can't own up to it. Decimal errors I don't argue over...this deserves argument. You say it's an obvious mistake to sell $100 of blu-rays for $50? Because even though that's not on EITHER exclusion list, it doesn't scan.
I tried to get $100 worth of Blu-rays for $50 and got turned down. They told me some BS about the discount had to be on single item. Because they were out of the James Bond set which was over $100 I drove 30 miles to another store. That didn't work. They would have made money had they accepted. But by that time they already received instruction from corporate to deny the coupon.

As I said before, there is a big difference between getting a bargain and capitalizing on someone's mistake and make them pay dearly for it. You and I both know the latter is what caused Best Buy to stop honoring the coupon. If no one bought thousands of dollars worth of giftcards and everyone was buying $100 coffeemakers, Blu-rays or video cards, they'd be running this promo all week long because they'd be making money.

Saw this on another board, seems to be too good to be true since you can obviously buy GC even with all of the exclusions. I haven't tried since it's 10pm PST but will first thing in the morning, in the meantime anybody wanna give it a shot and report back?

Other forum had some success stories.

Seems like just print coupon and take it in, and pay with any MasterCard.

so you're more than welcome to speak freely, as am I...but you keep on telling people to move on, and find something to do with their lives, and people have nothing better to do, etc etc, but you seem to be the one that won't leave, and have nothing better to do than to tell people to get over it and move on....again, pot meet kettle, kettle meet pot x2

No wonder bestbuy is going out of business...

***********************warning, the following post contains strong opinions that may or may not make sense to you. if you fall into the later, do not be alarmed -- finish reading the post, resist any urge you have to reply, brush your teeth, and go to sleep. one day it will hit you, but today is not your day.***********************

A company that can create, approve, and distribute such a "mistake" doesn't deserve to make profits and survive. Just imagine how many eyes saw this coupon and not a single person was able to spot the disastrous effects this coupon would have.

Half off coupon (50 off of 100) without a one use per person or household limit? half off coupon that didn't exclude gift cards? half off coupon valid for an entire week? these are inexcusable mistakes for a company making $50 billion revenue in 2012. I haven't had a single business class in my life and I recognized these rookie errors within seconds of reading the coupon. They couldn't afford to hire just one competent MBA graduate to review outgoing promotions?

I SAY RELEASE THE HOUNDS! slickdealers attack! teach corporations that they will be held accountable for all of their actions, including mistakes! mob the stores with 100 copies of this coupon and (politely) demand what you were promised! and when they won't honor it call corporate and give them (polite) hell. don't worry, people are being paid to deal with us. think of us as "job creators" of sorts Wink

the people who will suffer most from BB going under are the low level store employees who have minimal work experience and education. Yes, I do feel sorry that they will suffer if BB finally goes away; however, the longer we allow businesses and banks (and "too big to fail" entities) to make mistakes and bad decisions without dealing with the repercussions, the more we will suffer when these mistakes are made over and over again in the future.

if we make an example of bestbuy, perhaps more businesses will actually pay attention to the real world effects of their products and actions (probably not but we can wish, right?)

I haven't had a single business class in my life and I recognized these rookie errors within seconds of reading the coupon. They couldn't afford to hire just one competent MBA graduate to review outgoing promotions?
Exactly. The fine print is such a joke, the creative agency or even the dtp guy should have spotted it. laugh out loud

bait and switch...at least the entire 1st day was...argument could be made for the 2nd day since they did revise and make exclusions, and put signs up, although they did have the online coupon still up until the 3rd or 4th day I believe... I get that mistakes are made, but what the eman and ketamine said are correct...the very 1st think I did was look for exclusions for GCs , dates, and the fine print before I made a 25 min trip and went out of my way to buy a prepaid MC...

No wonder bestbuy is going out of business...

A company that can create, approve, and distribute such a "mistake" doesn't deserve to make profits and survive. Just imagine how many eyes saw this coupon and not a single person was able to spot the disastrous effects this coupon would have.

Best Buy deserves to be going out of business. But that's their competitors' job. People are here to hunt for bargains. But there is a difference when a few people capitalize on other's mistake and make them pay dearly for it, and by that I'm sure Best Buy meant the ones who got away with few thousand dollars of giftcards at 50% off when they never received the offer in the first place. If they run this promo til Sunday they'd lose billions.

I am pretty sure the coupon was reviewed and created not by one, but by a number of people, most of whom have MBA degrees. It just shows how little Best Buy corporate employees care. Just like they don't care when you call in with complaints, they don't care or think of consequences of their actions.

However, for most of the country, Best Buy is the only electronics store out there. It outlived its competitors like Circuit City, CompUSA, and such. Sure, there are pockets of population that have Fry's and similar, but majority of the country is not served by those stores.

Radio Shack turned into a joke trying to survive. If I go there to buy a resistor or a transistor they ask me if I would like a cell phone with that. It is no different than McDonalds asking me if I would like an apple pie with that.

Some may use Best Buy as showroom for Amazon, but Amazon would not have gotten to be what it is if it weren't for B&M competitors that it has had to compete with. They learned from their mistakes. Early Amazon was just as rude as Best Buy, if not worse when it came to returning something. But, they learned.

Newegg wouldn't have become what it is today had it not learned from the failure of the early egghead website that was short lived, had rude cusotmer service and offered pretty much same prices as local stores with added shipping on top.

Buy.com at one point was direct competitor for amazon, but they did not learn, or did not want to change. They are now just one of the million websites that people sometimes visit.

Perhaps Best Buy did not learn from previous mistakes, or people who learned from it, were removed and the new crop of people made the same mistakes. Which speaks volumes of their ability to retain experienced corporate employees.

Perhaps they are like a company that I worked for right out of school, they would only hire recent graduates because they could get them for cheap, and as people grew, there was no where for them to go within the company, and they left. The company always had young workforce, but they kept repeating the same mistakes over and over because people who have made those mistakes before were not there to prevent the new crop of employees from making them again. But, they are certainly happy to be a "me too" and in most cases "me three" kind of company.

This is where Best Buy is heading. It will be around, but they may pull out of markets where they have stiff competition from Frys and such. They will probably stay in markets where they are the king, and the only competition are small mom and pop shops that don't have the capital to compete with them. But, in markets where there was competition, the remianing competitors will charge whatever they want, and people will beyouch about Frys charging $50 for an HDMI cable.

Evidence showed that it wasn't never their intend to bait and switch. There are people who walked away with thousands of dollars worth of giftcards at 50% off which was a huge loss for Best Buy. This coupon was given to very limited number of people. The coupon shouldn't exist as is unless their intention was to lose billions of dollars in 7 days. People abused it before they can react, and they reacted poorly upon their own mistakes. They screwed up so they changed their mind. The true definition of bait and switch is advertising something attractive one doesn't have in order to lure you to the store to buy something else.
