"In the field" my experience with several soft-shells is that they are 1: never waterproof and 2: sponges. even if they keep you "dry". Take forever to dry too. A cheap wind/water shell like the Marmot Precip and a dozen similar jackets will be 100% water and windproof and you can wear cotton candy underneath , if that is your thing. ~13oz. I think I got mine for $75 on sale. Remember that a 4oz jacket is going to be made with 1/3 the fabric. Don't breathe as well as some soft shells, but then, "breathing" isn't much use if it's pouring rain. Now if you are skiing and it's bone dry, well, you aren't in Oregon are you?
I fully agree on the Marmot Precip jacket. I got mine for $49 from REI awhile back, and it's a gorgeous jacket. 100% waterproof, cool enough to comfortably wear up to about 85F in the rain, warm enough to wear down to about 40F, windproof, has pit zips, is durable enough to survive scrapes against cacti and on rock, has a good hood, looks good, and it's lined so it actually feels good if you're a little moist when you first put it on. It's a must-have for wearing above 10K, spring/summer/fall. It's actually doable here in the desert during winter, too. And it looks great.
Just beware, the Precip runs a little large. I'm 5'10", 170lbs with very broad shoulders. The Precip in M is actually big on me, where most L are just about right.
