SAMSUNG 840 Series MZ-7TD500KW 2.5" 500GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $320

Seems like a decent price/gb for such a high capacity drive. This is obviously MLC Toggle NAND, right?

Do any SDers have experience with this one to share?

There is perpetual confusion about the 840's.
The 840 series uses TLC NAND, the 840 Pro series uses MLC NAND.
I have an 830, 840, and 840 Pro. I haven't done serious benchmarking, just normal use, I'd say the 840 and 830 are pretty comparable on performance, and the 840 Pro is a bit faster on all fronts, but you probably won't notice if it's your first SSD or in general low-intensity computing.

Thorough benchmarks have been performed, and the improvements that Samsung has made on the TLC front discussed here:

I just submitted a price match to Amazon. Tax from newegg tacks ~$30 onto the price for me.

I have the 830 and 840 and agree they are comparable. The 840 might not be as durable but both are good for everyday use.

Anyone else disregard mounting spots and just find a good spot to let their SSDs hang in their cases? I understand making sure there's a good fit in a laptop, but I haven't bothered with a mounting kit for an SSD yet in my towers.

I've done it for testing, but since I go to LANs I wouldn't feel good about that. Anyway, my case [newegg.com] has a spot for an 2.5" SSD, so it's pretty painless.

This is all i would need in my gaming desktop.

I have a 180gb, but this would be all the gaming storage i would ever need.

Best price I've seen for 840 500GB (bare drive) was $300, and it still didn't convince me. I would price the kit maybe extra $5 more.

I agree with others here that 840 and 830 are on similar level. I might pay $10 more for the 830 if I had a choice, but 830 costs much more now since they don't have stock.

I'm still hunting for a very good deal on Samsung 250GB 840 or 256GB 840pro.

Thanks for the article. I've got an SSD right now, but it's just 180 so I want some more headroom for additional games to be co-installed. It seems like, despite the reduced lifecycle of TLC it will still last about 7 years with regular use. Might jump on this.

+ whatever, I also agree with people saying that the 840 (not pro) is not a bad SSD at all. It is not the fastest out there, but it is cheaper and plenty quick.

Tape it to the back of the motherboard tray or sit it at the bottom of your case.
