I am building a system with the following in mind:
40%: Photoediting massive D800 RAW files and some videoediting 40%: Gaming 20%: Surfing, web browsing etc. In terms of storage I am thinking: 128GB SSD Samsung 840 PRO (Operating system and drivers, etc) 256GB or 500GB SSD (Steam games + Lightroom 4 + Video Editing Software) 2TB HDD WD Black (Photo, Video, Music Storage) 2TB HDD WD Blue (Backup) How is this setup? The one in bold is the one I have questions regarding. I am deciding between 256GB Samsung 840 Pro or 500GB Samsung 840 Non-pro. If I get the 256 Pro version for Steam games and Lightroom etc, can I migrate the data from it to a new 512GB Pro version easily without bothering with clean install etc. in a year or so when the price drops? Is the Pro version worth it in terms of gaming and video/photoediting? or just stick with the 500GB non-pro version? Leave Tiger's Wood alone.

Would there be any benefit to using one of these in an external case in a 24 inch core 2 iMac? I have an older one, and due to some kind if weird limit I can't go past 4 gigs of RAM, according to OWC. This thing uses a lot of VM, and it's killing me. I'm 99% sure the mac can boot off USB, so this would hold me over for a while until I get a good deal on a newer Mac. Don't want another AIO mac as the screen is going on this one.

2. I do a lot of gaming and photo/video editing as well, neither are as IO intensive as they are CPU/GPU intensive, I keep some games on SSD, and I like the decreased load time, but it's not a game-changer, so I don't think you'll regret saving some cash by getting the 500 non-pro. 3. Photo and video editing are areas where you can benefit from more than 8GB memory, been some really good deals on 16GB kits. |

I am just not sure about the storage at the moment. |

Also, I have 2 GTX 470 in SLI configuration, it doesnt help with LR4 etc. So I'm in this same boat trying to boost up the speed. I do have 180gig Corsair Force GT3 for OS, the problem is 2 weeks worth of vacation pic with d800 net me 110GB I do not have enough space to save it in SSD, edit it, and throw it to my slow storage drive.Keep in mind Lightroom 4 use ALL cores, I have the old i7-930, it takes 1-2 second to export file, and also lagging when I'm trying to use LR's template theme. Frustating . Here a picture of LR4 test, exporting a d800 picture. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/12491989/D800-LR4.JPG I did not gain any aditional advantage by using ssd for battlefield 3 ( they have wait time for new round). It is advantage when you are playing Left for dead 2, you can load the map faster, so you get out the save room earlier. |

that's the best way to speed up lightroom is during import. make it generate full size previews, because that's what lightroom works on, and then put the lightroom cache folder on a ssd. the final exporting is still slow no matter the ssd/hd setup. http://www.computer-darkroom.com/...rformance/ of course if you have the cash there is no downside to having everything on SSDs Last edited by fyu; 01-23-2013 at 08:34 AM.. |
