Newbie question. What's the difference between a hammer drill and a plain old regular drill? i need a drill to drill holes in the wall (dry wall) to hang pictures and such. Will a hammer drill be too much for this small task?

Hammer drill is for masonry.

Get a small cordless for drywall.

A hammer drill can induce a hammering motion (back and forth) while you are applying solid pressure. This is useful for drilling through harder surfaces (concrete). I used a friend's when drilling through the cinderblock in my house to run tubing outside. I believe all hammer-drills can have the hammering function turned off, and can be used as a standard drill as well.

I already have a great cordless drill, but the fact that this is corded and hammering is a nice plus, and for the price it almost makes sense to have it around as a backup ($30 including a 3-year warranty?! sign me up!).

Hammer drills are used mainly for masonry such as concrete or block walls.
You don't need a hammer drill for drywall, you don't really need a drill at all unless you are hanging it, shove a small flathead into the wall for a pilot hole, then get one that is slightly smaller than whatever you want to screw into the wall, such as an anchor.

A cheap B&D drill will work for drywall.

A hammer drill would help you get through concrete. A regular drill would be fine for drywall.
