I ordered one of these from Amazon a couple of weeks ago. I was scared of DOA because of all of the Newegg reviews. It didn't come in the most secure packaging, but I got no bad sectors after running WD Data Lifeguard.
I also didn't want to deal with return postage to Newegg, which Amazon always pays for if something's wrong with their products upon arrival. It's a great drive though, fast enough for storage for sure. |

Even though the data file of those programs is password protected, and possibly encrypted, would you still feel secure in letting someone refurbish that drive with your password file on it? Someone mentioned in a previous thread that one of the HD manufacturers just asks you to run some tests and send them the printout, with no need to send back the drive. That's the only way I would try for a replacement drive. Otherwise I would just eat the cost. |

If the files are encrypted it's fine. No one is interested enough in your data to deal with decrypting a TrueCrypt volume or other encryption modalities.... BTW, officially, all the HDD manufacturers destroy/low level format returned drives as standard practice. Not to say this couldn't be false/lies...just saying. If they didn't they are opening to significant legal issues if customers data was stolen causing identify theft etc. Last edited by blahbooboo2; 01-23-2013 at 09:32 AM.. |
