These cards to not expire. I think you can load up to 2 or 3 years on your account so that it will just keep going.
They make great gifts.
Likely a stupid question but as a non-Xbox owner or Live subscriber I have to ask:
Do these cards expire?
Do they have to be used this year or by this time next year?
(i.e.: Can I buy 6 of them for an Xbox Live fan and basically set them up for the next 6 years? Or give them one this year, and another next year, and another the year after that etc?)
I can attest to the fact that certain Xbox Live Gold cards, when purchased from retail stores, do expire!
I bought a 12-month Xbox Live Gold card in 2010 from BestBuy.com, but I didn't try to activate it until June 2012. Xbox gave me an error that said something along the lines of "contact the retail store", and Xbox.com gave em a numerical error code. I had to look the error code on the Xbox forum/FAQ.
Here's the explanation. When you buy certain pre-paid Xbox Live Gold membership cards from a retail store, they activate it at the register during checkout. Online orders are activated before they are sent out (the process is now automated for Best Buy). However, if you hold on to the card for too long without redeeming it on your Xbox profile, the "activation" expires. I don't know if this is a special case with Best Buy, or if it's a Microsoft-mandated expiration. In any case, after a certain time, the card is still "valid", but need re-activation through the retailer.
I had to call Best Buy on three separate nights, about 3 hours per call. After the first call, they advised me to go in to a local store. However, the customer service department didn't know what to do with a deactivated card, especially since I purchased it from the website rather than at that specific store.
After three nights of speaking with 6 different departments, I was finally transferred to the Best Buy corporate office and spoke with the head of North American Corporate Customer Relations (I forget her name). After speaking with her for a few minutes, she was able to look up my order and find the activation status, which stated that it had been activated at the time of purchase but needed to be re-activated. She apologized for the 'error', refunded me the full amount I paid back in 2010, and over-nighted me a new Xbox Live Gold 1-year membership card at no charge.
As stated before, if you redeem the code on your Xbox profile, it shouldn't expire. But if you sit on that card for too long, the activation on it will expire (depending on the retailer, most likely).
