Panasonic Plasma sale at Paul's TV -- All Models listed-UPDATE 1/25

Just came back from a local store and compared the 55" ST to the 55" UT (because they happened to be near each other on the wall) and I don't think I saw a $400 difference in picture quality. They are selling the UT for $839 and the ST was about $1250. Most of the content we watch comes from satellite/cable and not 1080P sources. So not sure I need the upscale features of the ST or even GT. Was originally leaning for a 60" GT.

From all the reading. The ST is every bit as good as the GT to the naked eye when it's calibrated. ( not necessarily professionally. Just personally with some settings you can find online, avs, etc.. )

GT only looks better out of the box.

I found a 65 inch ST at another store, funny thing they are selling that for $8 less, I told the guy why would I buy the ST when the other store is selling a GT for $8 more. Well at least he was smart and agreed with me.

There are two THX modes, one for night viewing and one for daylight viewing. It's just nice to have the option to be able to switch between the two for different scenarios.

If you have a light controlled environment and don't think the dual core processor is worth it, the ST is the choice to go with.

i'm waiting for the 65VT to drop, i'm interested in the 24p it has.

Yes, it's nice to have it already there, and off you go.
But for people with budget contraints, you can setup a custom profile that is equal the THX bright room or however you like it.

That said, if it's a deal, ie: 55ST vs 60GT for $100 more, I would probably go with the GT.

But if it's say 55ST for $1200 and 55GT for $1500, I would go with ST.
The st to gt figures I pulled out my arse as an example btw.

Both CNET and some experts on AVS have said the ST/GT's 60Hz mode is almost indistinguishable from the VT's 96hz mode. Both handle 24p content very smoothly.

Grrr. No 65ST.

Just curious. How did you return it? Did you carry it in or ship it back? There's no way I could personally return a 55" set, so I would rely on the retailer's policy for shipping back returns.

In my opinion, open box merchandise shouldn't be sold, especially if they were display items. Those TV's are on from morning until closing, and there's no telling how they may have been mishandled. Hoping the shipper handles new merchandise correctly during delivery is enough of a worry.
