Good to see prices on these 7200rpm drives dropping.
These are some extremely high performance mechanical drives, here's them compared to the WD reds: Tom's Hardware - Benchmark [tomshardware.com] Last edited by UA_Iron; 01-24-2013 at 02:27 PM.. |

Most products on Newegg tend to have mixed reviews. Hard drives especially can be hit or miss, regardless of the brand. Some work great whereas others are either DOA or die shortly after being placed into service. It's really just the luck of the draw. Besides, most people only post reviews when they have something to gripe about. How many people that bought an item with no problems take the time to go back and post a review after they've had a chance to live with it for a while? All Newegg reviews should be taken with a huge grain of salt. The sampling is generally far too small to be of any real value.

While one cannot argue with the performance numbers, the WD Red's are not meant for performance. They are aimed at reliability, and for use in a 24/7 environment. These drives are not, and have 1 year less on their warranty.
These drives have a "power-on hours" of only 100 days worth. Pitiful for a NAS or home server which typically runs 24/7. The Red's have more than 3x the power on number. http://www.tomshardware.com/revie...248-2.html |

Same drive that was $70 on black friday. Good drive... fast, reliable.
Great rebate Companies:
Patriot Memory (4myrebate.com): 6 Weeks Tiger Direct (4myrebate): 3 weeks Rain-X (in house): 3 weeks BAD BAD MAIL IN REBATE COMPANIES: Xigmatek 26 weeks, 14 emails, 2 phone calls (finally received) NZXT 21 weeks, 4 phone calls. Check that was finally received was dated 2 months earlier with a 90 day expiration on it, giving me about 25 days to cash it. Shady shady shady. |

I bought this drive for around the same price with a 3 yr warranty when it came on sale at Best Buy a few months ago. It's been running just fine so far. My only complaint is the 'chirping' sound that happens whenever the drive is accessed from being idle. There was a firmware release that reduced it a bit but other than that, it's been annoying as hell.
From what I researched you cant even disable the idling of the plates when not in use. Very annoying. |

Still, you are right about the hit or miss of certain products. The difference is that certain models within each brand have higher quality, which occurs at design & factory production state, and those are the products that usually shows 4.5 stars, and those are the ones we should purchase. The rest are pretty similar in the failure rate within each category. |

I have this drive, it died within the first month but i'm sure it was just a faulty drive, but just like what faizoff said about the chirping noise, the drive has an automatic power saving feature so when it's not being used, the head will park and unpark very loudly when in use again, strongly recommend getting the firmware update asap if you get this drive.
