I rarely break 12 MBps with my 300 Mbps wifi with gigabit Ethernet backbone.
12 MBps is roughly the max transfer rate of 100 Mbps ethernet.

Despite my initial confusion with the same claim, upon learning more about wifi, I realized that the 300 Mbps - 100 Mbps combo is actually somewhat evenly matched for multiple wifi device household.
I only gain the benefit of gigabit when transferring large files between my RAID arrays thru ethernet.

Dang, all I want is a Gigabit, N router that supports DD-WRT for like $25 or less. This doesn't quite fit the bill...

I need something cheap that I can use to make my printer a network printer.

If you have a NAS or do file transfers using CAT5, you need gigabit. I had to use an old 100 FE switch for a while due to my gigabit biting the dust, it was painful. 12.5 MB/s transfers, max. Got a new gigabit, back to 130 MB/s. Much better.

I frequently see the argument that you need gigabit for lan transfers, with a 10/100 inbound connection I just use one line to a gigabit switch for data over wire transfers and everything else is wireless. Any reason I would want to move to a single device solution? the reason I have 2 devices is the bulk of my wired devices are in one location and the wireless devices roam/are spread, so my router is centralized in my house and the switch is local to my wired devices.

I'm amazed by products like this, that claim 300 Mbps wireless speeds, but only include a 100 Mbps wired switch. I don't do much wireless-to-wireless data transfer... Seems like a product that was designed by the marketing department to meet a price point.

I would like to attach 2 printers to the network. One is a monochrome laser (Brother, I think) and the other is a color laser (Dell 3210c or something like that). Right now, I have the Dell plugged in via USB to my daughter's laptop. That works out since she is supposed to do her homework at the desk where the printer is. But, sometimes she takes her laptop to a friend's house to work on homework (yea, right).
Thus the need for a network printer. I'm not in a position to buy a different printer right now.
