Do replace the existing SATA HDD, yes. In addition to the existing SATA HDD, probably not as there just will not be enough room for such.

Any normal SATA SSD will do.
There are a few rare types that connect differently, but yours is a normal one.
You can use a SATA2 or SATA 3, as both will work at the same rate, as your interface is SATA2, but the advantage of the SATA3 is that you might use it in the future in another computer that does have the SATA3 interface, thus benefiting of even greater speed.

Forgive my ignorance. How do you my interface is SATA2?

I've had some G570's that were SATA2 but I see now that the newer G570's come with SATA3, so yours might be SATA3 after all.
You'd have to check with the SKU to be sure, or you can look in the device manager to see the model of the hard drive, then Google it to see if it's SATA 2 or 3.

There are multiple ways of doing it.
By using the Windows System Image, as long as the new SSD is big enough to receive it.
Aftermarket cloning software.
Some SSD's come with cloning software.
A new installation, to which you add the drivers and utilities from the manufacturer's website.
Some new computers have the ability to make recovery discs that might do the job.

To the OP: If you post the size of the present hard drive and the size of the partitions (if there are any), as well as the size of the SSD you plan on getting, we can make better suggestions as to how to proceed with the OS installation.

Current hard drive is ST500LM012 HN-M500MBB (total HD space is 500gb, partition size is 28.9gb by itself)

If you'd like to have an exact copy of your present hard drive onto the SSD, it can be done fairly easily. (if so, let me know and I can post instructions)
Is that what you had in mind, or did you want to go with a clean installation?

To clone your existing hard drive with Windows System Image, you need to shrink the OS partition as small as you can, so as to hopefully get it down to below the total size of your SSD.
For instance, let's say your SSD has an actual 235 gigs, then your image has to be that size or less.
If you can shrink your OS drive down to 200 gigs and you're obliged to include a recovery partition of 20 gigs, then the total would be less than the max of the SSD, thus it would work.
Follow the instructions in the attached pics below. (You'll need an external hard drive to put the image on)
Once you have finished making the image, you'll be offered to burn a repair/restore DVD, which you'll accept.
Then you install the SSD into your laptop and boot up from the DVD you just made and choose the option for restoring an image you made and accept all the options and the image will be installed on your SSD in a short period of time.

If all this is too much for you, send me a PM and we'll set up a free remote session and I'll do it for you.
Of course, you'll need an external hard drive and a blank DVD.

I performed most of the steps you specified. SSD has already been physically installed.
The last step that was successful for me was I was able to set the laptop to boot from the DVD image I made.

When I try to 'restore computer from image I created earlier' using the external HD, I get the error "system image failed" " No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found"

When I try the restore using the DVD I created I get the error "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware"

ADDTL INFO: In the BIOS (I think its called the bios), the SSD I installed shows up so I am assuming I installed it correctly.
