I've heard roku and wdtv live are completely different: Roku is primarily a streamer for movies and tv shows from the web like netflix, hulu and many other websites, while wdtv is mainly for different file types (mkv, mp4,divx,mov, wmv, etc) on your harddrives and some streaming from web sites.
Are there any good deals on wdtv live?? I found a couple of very suspicious scam deals on ebay from CHINA: $18 and $27 recertified. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-D...4e22#rpdId http://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-D...4108990%26 Part of me wants to take a chance but my wiser side tells me to avoid the ebay deals like the plague. If it's too good to be true then it probably is.... (both sellers have 0 rating and joined ebay today and a week ago). Last edited by atoneapone; 01-27-2013 at 09:20 PM.. |

The wiki is dead wrong.
- you can give them your Amex reward $9 card, that's fine: - Customer Service is very good; - once you install Plex channel, you can play all your local media in any format flawlessly. I'd recommend editing the Wiki post, it is full of it. Roku 2 XS rocks.

ROKU does NOT play files from shared folders or NAS. I repeat it does NOT. Plex server requires you to set up a home server have plex running in the background, have the desktop or laptop running full force loud and useless (because it's running the useless plex server thats taking 80% of the CPU load.) So I pay to buy ROKU but they don't want to pay Microsoft or whomever to license SMB?or the free Samba variation? Just because they can't make money off of it? Pathetic. |

I wouldn't say it is actually "garbage" - and yes I own 3 WDTV along with 2 Logitech Revues. The reason why I bought a ROKU was because of PLEX.
PLEX is a free media server software that will stream your medial to just about anywhere - even over the internet to your cell phone or tablet (there is a small fee for the app) The main advantage of PLEX/ROKU is that Plex has a great interface built in that will show you a cover image along with a description and rating. Last time I checked, you had to manually do this for WDTV after you changed the firmware. The ROKU is also easier to navigate with it's remote control WHICH IS RF (you can hide the box out of site and the remote still works!) The only cons I see is when fast forwarding or reversing, it will not show the video. And, it will not detect network shares - you will need some sort of media server to do that Here is a quick video on PLEX I found - take a look http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8OYjkSyaxU Last edited by NotReal; 01-27-2013 at 11:35 PM.. |

I can only add that you can control Roku thru wifi from any Android phone or tablet using free Roku app from the Google Play Store. One can hate Plex/Roku combo if s/he wants to all the way. To me it is exciting. I taught my parents to use it in no time. Now they have full access to my Plex server and my media collection, including photos and music. It would take me forever to install HTPC for them and the teach them how to use it. Roku solves the problem. You can also send your photos and music, stored on your phone/tablet to your big screen TV from Roku app. Last edited by Bagira; 01-28-2013 at 05:32 AM.. |

http://www.amazon.com/Boxee-D-Lin...B0038JE07O AND this is funny, If you click on the Amazon link you will see the Boxee is ranked #12 in their best sellers. Guess what device is Amazon's best seller in Digital Media Devices. I will give you a clue, it starts with a R ends with as U and has a OK in the middle http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsell...e_1_4_last AND let me add - could you hide the Boxee box behind a wall mounted flat screen TV Bottom line is this - most "enthusiasts" who want to use a device like the ROKU or even the WDTV have a LARGE collection of media and are using some sort of home server to stream it to different devices. PLEX with ROKU works very well for this and it is nice to have a common interface - either on my computer, my tv or my phone When I first saw what people were doing with cover art for WDTV - I thought it was very cool, but it was a lot of work. PLEX does it for you Last edited by NotReal; 01-28-2013 at 07:50 AM.. |
