If you don't know anything about this camera (or how to use search engines), it will be way too much for you and a waste of money. Stick with a P&S. A Canon PowerShot 100/110 HS would probably be perfect for you.

Jaysorbet, for most people canon t3i or t4i is good enough.
While 5Dmk2 is a good deal at this price, it's a lot of camera for novice user.

Decent deal... but I'd recommend paying a bit more if you can and getting the 6D for better picture quality, newer tech, WiFi, and GPS.

I got the 6D kit for $2699 and got a refund when it dropped so I paid $2499, It came out at $2899. Don't expect it to get much, if at all, cheaper than $2499 for a few years.

The only exception (for most, anyways) is they know what they're doing. One can't simply pick one of these up and shoot amazing pictures. Drives me nuts when people I know think it's that easy so they go off and buy a DSLR and take crappy pictures. My wife's cousin got married a couple years ago and the lady used a T1i w/18-55 and the built in flash. They looked like shit. Like point and shoot bad, maybe worse. I would've shot it (and got a million times better results...which isn't saying much...lol) but they didn't ask me. Okay, ending this rant, and not directing it at you, just at the topic in general.

I believe 6D will drop into $1500-$1600 soon. D600 rules 6D in 90% of features. Only people who invested heavily in canon lens would get 6D. Then, these people who put a lot of money in canon lens are most likely to get 5D Markiii (for instance, me). If you only have eos 350d before, you won't hesitate a second to go for Nikon D600 for full frame.

Unless you are making 30 inch prints or shooting in extremely low light, you won't notice a difference. And lenses will be a bigger issue before the sensor at this point. WiFi and GPS are pretty useless unless you need wireless sync of studio work or are too lazy to setup the many simple GPS apps that use a phone to check times when you copy over to the PC.

The price is amazing for the 5D Mark II. It isn't ideal for sports shooting because of the older AF system (which the 6D has inherited some parts of) and doesn't have 60FPS movie shooting, but other than that it is an amazing camera. Assuming of course that one knows how to use a dSLR beyond the automatic mode, and have decent glass to take advantage of the sensor quality. I've taken a great deal of shots (some examples [500px.com]) with my 5D Mark II and I'm not looking to upgrade anytime soon. And for this price, I strongly recommend it for those wanting to upgrade from a Rebel or older body unless one absolutely needs features on the newer models.

By regular you mean....


Point and shoot? No. A T4i kit would be more appropriate for someone upgrading from a point and shoot.

An APS-C DSLR? Maybe, if a person knows what they're doing and could use the full frame features. Maybe not, if they're not proficient yet or need something faster like a 7D.

Just don't expect magic pictures from these. It takes work, not only with the camera settings and post processing, but you have to develop your lighting and techniques as well.

Based on Canon's history, doubtful. $400 off months after it came out is pretty good for them. I considered the D600 but I preferred not to deal with oil and dust and frankly, an inferior camera. Oh, but boy did I consider making the switch from the ol' T4i!

As for the Mk III.....meh. I can't justify that much money on a toy. People who make money doing it, absolutely.
