You didn't mention if your Dad has internet, but if he does you can also look into using a specific type of ATA adapter to do alarm monitoring over the internet. You would most likely not want to try to use a device like the Obi for alarm. Also, that's a lot of money to pay for alarm monitoring (assuming he isn't doing anything fancy like video, etc). Check out geoarm.com or some of the other wholesale monitoring companies. I hate to see people getting ripped off. Last edited by lonekazoo; 01-25-2013 at 07:36 AM.. |

CAN ANYONE CONFIRM OR DENY THIS ITEM IF IT WILL WORK SENDING AND RECEIVE FAXES. I used to have ooma (totally free) but the box was taken and ooma will not grandfather me back in, I used that for fax sending, which sometimes took a couple trys and other times it went right through. receiving fax on old ooma box never was worth the trouble.
wondering if anyone can say they use either this box in the thread or new ooma for faxing. Thanks |

http://www.obihai.com/FAQ.html#fa...th-the-OBi obi202 looks like a better choice with built in support for t38 fax. I'm wondering if enabling t38 will improve chances of getting a dialup modem to connect. |

If Ooma were going to be cutting service, (a) the Obi seems like the next best deal, and (b) I'd think there'd be more heard about it... Considering a new pet? Have a

I've been using this for over 2 yrs with GV as my business line and haven't had to do anything to it since plugging it in. I have 6 friends using it for over a year - after I recommended it - with no problems.
Just putting that out there because I am surprised some people have termed it 'buggy' |

Since Google provides GV for use only from their webpage (which the Obi, Asterisk, etc. emulate), their frontend (the webpage) always works with their backend (servers). This is, of course, because they control both and provide a functioning system. When there is a a GV tweak, the backend interface (to which third-party devices connect) changes. Third-party developers must then identify what's been altered, write a fix, and deliver it in the form of an update. Obi firmware is among the fastest to be updated when one of these changes occurs. But it does users no good if they don't do the update! Both of the 110's I've put in have been rock-solid. Last edited by cuetoon; 01-25-2013 at 08:00 AM.. Reason: make "user" plural for clarity |

Anybody have luck using the OBI as a SIP device with an Asterisk sever? I'm using Incredible PBX/Free PBX and am having problems using the OBI with it.
I can receive calls on the OBI through Asterisk but I can't make calls with it. The rest of my SIP phones work fine but I'd really like to have a few OBIs hooked up to it as well. |

I agree with you. ooma cost will be around $45 per year for me. Obihai device monthly cost will be free at least for now but seems like can't work well with alarm monitoring service and newer fax technology. I'm currently on nettalk and their yearly cost only $30 without any hidden fees (taxes and other charges). works well with my alarm monitoring system and my fax machine as well. I think I'm going to stay with this company for the moment. . |
