Bro, you run 16GB RAM to use 5GB on your slow 35W tablet. It's pretty obvious you don't understand caching. I was laughing when I saw your screenshot. And now you're saying that 4GB on this puny 17W netbook is not enough. Yup, that extra 11GB of idle RAM is really caching for you.

"Caching speeds things up!" Petard
I am going to have to agree with charlie310 on this.
http://www.tomshardware.com/revie...778-8.html

The caching you are speaking of has very little benefit. The only way it is practical to upgrade the memory would be to use a RAMdisk or for programs like photoshop, VMs, etc. You would be much better off putting that money towards purchasing a small 64GB or 128GB SSD. You would see a vastly larger improvement from it. The Disk I/O has always been the bottleneck of modern systems.

Agreed - but I believe is teh future direction of laptops.

My little kids always go for the screen (having been born in a house full of smartphones, ipad, tablets)

is the Kingston v300 the best ssd for this right now? 120gb is about $85+tax at staples?

any better deals out there?

If there are good deals on 256GB SSDs, please post links. Appreciate it. Thx
This could be the answer to both of your questions, depending if you're looking for a top-of-the-line 256GB deal or just something really cheap:

Plextor M5P is best bet and way more stable than sandforce-based drives.

Too bad it's 11"... if they made a 15" for double the price, I'd be on this deal in a heartbeat.
They do. At the Staples near me, there is an Acer, which is basically a 15" version of this computer, for $699. Same processor, same amount of memory and hard drive space, and to me, the Acer's screen felt more responsive, but with the swarming of slickdealers to Staples yesterday, who knows what the display 11" Asus was put through.

Sitting next to each other, the Acer really does look like an upsized version of this computer. And according to their website, for $100 more, you can step up to an i5 processor and 6GB RAM, although it shows as online-only and out of stock.

I had trouble buying from Staples because they wouldn't accept my phone number. I tried firefox, IE, and chrome and couldn't get past the "please check your phone number and try again" until I put in a random number instead of either my mobile phone or office phone number. Drove me crazy for an hour.

You may have goofed there. I believe that's a 9mm drive and wont fit. Most ssds are 9mm, please not people that only a 7mm will fit this build.
I think you may have your info wrong Chief. Take a look at the spec. underneath the photo of the drive here:

http://www.storagereview.com/samsung_ssd_830_review_256gb
[storagereview.com]

and here(the caption underneath the 4th picture:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/486...830-review

quote from the article: "The 830 is a very pretty drive, something Samsung is quite proud of. The 7mm chassis is all plastic save for the aluminum top plate. The bare drive doesn't ship with an adaptor for 9.5mm bays. If your notebook requires a 9.5mm drive you'll need a carrier of some sort to make the drive fit"

Just as a safety caution, I checked to see if the 128GB has the same casing as the 256GB and sure enough the outside of the box has 7mm height print right in the front.

This is a great deal. I paid $500 for the x202e in November (same thing but with bluetooth instead of the external drive). I did a fresh install of Win8 on a 128GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD and this thing is great. Very fast considering the hardware it uses and pretty decent battery life.

A couple notes:
1 you can't upgrade RAM which is fine for most users. I was fully aware going into this. I wish it was upgradeable though.
2. the battery can be replaced, but is not easily accessible as with most laptops.

This has more in line with an ultrabook than a laptop in regards to being thin and not easy to upgrade. It is a bit wide for an 11.6" screen so look for 13" sleeves.

i wonder if the peeing contest about RAM and caching will continue all weekend. on an even less interesting subject, any suggestion on a screen protector for this?

A few questions after a days use.

1. System seems to run pretty warm from just streaming video. Anything that can aid in cooling? I've read a BIOS update might help. Does swapping in an SSD affect system heat in anyway?

2. Does battery life get better after a few discharges/recharges? Right now getting a little over 3 hours on power save and almost minimum brightness.

Don't bother, you will stop using touch screen after 4 weeks.

I have 64 core server at work with 512 GB RAM - all to myself. And for about 4 weeks a year I deploy the application I work on on Oracle Exadata/Exalogic combination with 4 Tb RAM total with 200 15K RPM HDDs and 200 GB SLC SSD as storage. Try beating that beast!

That said application works on this laptop under Win 7 along with Oracle 11.2. Go figure.

2. It does. However new version of Power4Gear adopted to Win 8 is buggy and does not use proper settings. Uninstalling does not help much, must reinstall whole OS.
