Can anyone with the X230/230T answer a question for me? With the 1366x768 resolution, can you have two documents open next to each other comfortably? I'm looking for something smallish/light to take around with me at school. I like the small form factor and long battery life (6 or 9 cell). The only things that would keep me from going with this over the X1 Carbon are the crappy touchpad and smaller resolution/smaller screen. Price is also a consideration as the X230 (non tablet) is significantly cheaper than the X1 Carbon and much easier to upgrade.

Just asked Lenovo and they said it is an IPS screen.
It is 12.5" (317.5mm) HD (1366x768) TFT color, anti-glare, LED backlight, 300 nits, 16:9 aspect ratio, 500:1 contrast ratio, IPS, MultiTouch screen supports pen & five-finger gesture Not an expert on knowing what that means but I see IPS in there |

just ordered an refurbished x230t with i7-3520m, hd4000, 4gig Ram, 320gb, multitouch, bluetooth for $763 + tax - 5% shopdiscover...
i think it's a good deal....i don't mind the low config as far as the ram/storage goes...they can be easily upgraded as needed. already had a high end engineering workstation at work, just need a device that is capable enough to open the drawings, read pdf spec sheets/manuals, and a go to/transition device from home to work. Hopefully I can get rid of my iPad altogether (it just doesn't cut it for productivity use) |

The thinkpads are NOT as tough as the prior generations but still tough as hell. The screens are less tough than older x series so can no longer beat someone to death with your screen without damage. Too many drops in a bag or too much heavy stuff on top will crack it. That said, I have a bunch of field staff with x220/x230 non tablets. Construction site use, cold/hot weather. Way better than Mac or ultrabooks that would crack in 1st month! Those fools quickly went back to X series for our uses. A good investment for school. Light enough, tough enough battery life decent to last all work day with normal use. Extra bonus is these are "ugly" to some and look like older thinkpads. Less chance to be stolen. Even the engineers never did use the tablet function much. Nice to have but only I have a tablet version. These with "old" chipsets are being dumped so can be solid value. Lenovo outlet is horrific customer service...but I have used all the time and always got everything expected. Good luck in school! |

For those doubting Lenovo's service, let me tell a tale. I have an X220 refurb purchased in mid-2012. Last Saturday, daughter spills water on it. The keyboard should survive this, but a trackpoint button failed. I filled out a service request on Sunday on IBM's service site saying it didn't work anymore. Tuesday morning, new keyboard was on my doorstep, overnighted to me. Put dead keyboard back in box, stuck on prepaid shipping label, called UPS and they came and got it to recycle it. No emails, no phone calls, no fake excuses necessary.
This is my 8th Thinkpad, and this is why. Can anyone speak as to whether or not you'll get this service from any other vendor. |

OP, I got similar config but with the following differences for $100 more ($550 to be precise)
- IPS screen vs. your non IPS - i5 2.6 Ghz vs. your i3 - Intel HD 4000 vs. your 3000 - 6 cell vs. your 3-cell - 500 GB hard drive I believe I have fingerprint too. No optical drive though. I would say that you should wait for a better configuration. These things go in and out of stock all the time. Just be patient! Good luck |

Definitely can snag better than the OP deal if you watch for them. I got this: Lenovo X230 Tablet Processor: Intel® Core™ i5-3320M Processor (3M Cache, 2.60 GHz)( ) Operating system: Windows 7 Professional 64 - English Display: 12.5" HD WXGA (1366 X 768) MultiTouch LED backlight" Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics 4000 Memory: 4 GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600MHz SODIMM Memory Hard Drive: 128GB SATA 2.5" Solid State Drive Optical Drive: No Optical Included Battery: ThinkPad Battery 67+ (6 cell) Warranty: 1 Year Standard Depot Warranty for $664 + tax. Don't forget to upgrade your unit with a second stick of RAM (preferably a low voltage 4gb module), dual-channel mode enhances the performance significantly and is only enabled of course when you have two modules inside! A great option (and what I picked) is this Samsung 30nm 1.35v 4gb DDR3 1600 RAM from amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00591ZYX8/

Two things on your x230t. - Change to an SSD. You will see MUCH quicker performance along with better battery life and MUCH MUCH faster boot up times. 2nd - I don't believe that your I7 is a quad core. I'm not sure the performance advantage of a dual core I7 over an I5 is really worth the price premiums that they charge. Seems like I3/I5/I7 are all in the same area if their clockspeed and processor generation are the same (high level 3rd gen I3 and low level I7 are somewhat similar). The quad core I7 completely changes and jumps by a good margin (20% or more). If I needed a tablet/laptop I probably would take a look at this. I came in here to look up some info on it but a shame sold out already. Change this to an SSD and for $535 would have had a nice little laptop. SLICKDEALS TO DATE:
