why a thinkpad is costlier than the essential category laptops? even with same or better specs? Embarrassment

Thinkpads cost more because they are not consumer-grade trash that will fall apart in 18 months. They are business-class notebooks designed to be hauled all over the place and can be upgraded by the end user easily.

However, it is entirely impossible to justify buying an X230 without the IPS display.

So they used a last gen processor? x230s only should have an ivy bridge chip! Still good deal

They're still trying to dump all their overstocked SB CPUs from the *20 series books. Good enough for basic use, though. If I only had $500 to buy a near-ultrabook/supercharged netbook this would be perfect. That display and battery are a shame!

I recently bought Lenovo G580, Intel Core i5-3210M, 15.6" Screen Display, Notebook with 4GB Memory, 500GB Hard Drive, Windows 8 for $480 (including shipping and taxes). Can anyone comment how good is it a deal? If not worth I still can make returns :/

I believe this was true when IBM owned this brand. Abysmal Lenovo reputation and service would lead me to believe that the quality is down from the historic levels at IBM. I gave Lenovo a shot and found their products pure junk and service levels horrible.

I haven't owned a thinkpad before my x230t, and it is a much better constructed machine than any of my past dell, hp, compaq and asus laptops. For example, grab the thing by the screen while it is open at any angle and the hinge won't budge at all. Zero flex in the keyboard no screen distortion by applying pressure to either side. Typing experience is beautiful. Super solid machine

I've owned and used Thinkpads since the IBM days. Quality has slipped a bit, but the machines are still tremendously superior to the consumer-grade machines almost everyone else peddles. Support remains excellent in my experience, and not remotely comparable to any other manufacturer.

Basically only two decent notebook types remaining are the Lenovo ThinkPad X/T/W lines and Apple.

Completely disagree. I have owned my Thinkpad T series for almost 6 years and haven't had any hardware problems at all. That thing is built like a tank. Only other PCs that I've seen with comparable build quality are the HP elitebooks and those are priced significantly higher.
