The Raspberry Pi team only expected to ship around 5,000 of these annually, they're doing that daily I think (they've sold over a million). I think they're doing pretty good given the circumstances and that they're a non-profit.
However, Newark letting their website show as in stock when it's back ordered for 2+ weeks is completely inappropriate. They know by showing no stock they lower the likelihood of you ordering and just waiting for it to show up.
Yeah that was their initial excuse, but it's been a while since that point and they're still having supply problems. That 4k a day has to be a bogus estimate, because I just saw something about them doing 100% UK production at 40k a month or something. It's been fairly clear that these guys are way out of their league and that no matter how much time they have it won't change that fact or alleviate their problems or make their excuses vanish.
Ironically I ordered when it showed no stock and got it in less than a week. So it's probably just Newark that has a crappy system.
