While you may get a Baraccuda 5900 DM0000 drive inside packaging that mentions Windows 8, you may also get a Barraccuda XT 7200 DX000.

I say this because I have two opened enclosures in front of me. The same identical Windows 8 printing on both boxes! Event the PN on the sticker on the black plastic enclosure is the same: '1DXAP4-500 4TB'. Note the X in the part number here does NOT mean 7200 rpm.

I doubt Seagate cares much about which box they use to throw the black plastic external drive enclosure into. They certainly do not care to document what you are buying as to 7200 or 5900 rpm. It this was an automombile manufacturer who played foot loose and fancy free with the engine the plopped into your brand new car, there would be hell to pay. State Attorney General hell. Some may rememember when Cadillac threw in engines marked Oldsmobile and had to pay a substantial penalty. If memory serves me, the engines were the same specification, just built on different assembly lines. In the case of Seagate the disks are NOT the same. 7200 rpm is significantly different than 5900 rpm. Note though that some may prefer the 5900 rpm because it is a newer design and may have less heat. Regardless, IMHO this could be class action suit. Contract law requires specificity as to elements of a purchase that are viewed as material to such purchase. I doubt Seagate would succeed in claiming this information is 'proprietary'. How Seagate manufacures a drive may be proprietary, but NOT its RPM.

All I can say is I have consistently gotten DM drives in windows 8 printed logo on boxes, and DX drives in Windows 7 sticker (which is not printed but stuck om top of the boxes). I have done 11 drives now. Same result.

Finally opened mine. Windows 8 logo on the package. 4000DM000 on the inside. Oh well. Planning to use them in a ReadyNAS Ultra 2. Hoping I don't have compatibility issues!
