Separately from the 'sticker', what is printed on the box?
All I can say is I have consistently gotten DM drives in windows 8 printed logo on boxes, and DX drives in Windows 7 sticker (which is not printed but stuck om top of the boxes). I have done 11 drives now. Same result.
Thanks for your reply. The two boxes I mentioned were printed with the Window 8 reference on the box. No stickers. Also I did NOT buy from Costco. The one with 5900 rpme, Barracuda (no XT,) DM000 inside was from Staples. The one with 7200 rpm, Barracuda XT, DX000 inside was from Newgg.
When you write>"... DX drives in Windows 7 sticker (which is not printed but stuck om top of the boxes) ..."
Separately from the 'sticker', what is printed on the box? Does the box printing mention 'Windows 8', or only 'Windows 7'. Are you saying that Costco, or someone else, went thru the effort to put a sticker on what is the SAME box to identify which were 7200 rpm?
Thanks for your help to figure this out. I suspect your experience is only good for Costco.
Is there a utility that you can run to determine if the drive is DX or DM? I just purchased the drive from Costco and run the SeaTools utility and is not telling me whether the drive is DX or DM. What utility are you quys using?
The closest Costco to me only had the packages with the Windows 8 compatibility logo on them, so I had to go to another one that had both packages with the Windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibility logos. What's interesting to note is that both of the PN numbers and dates for both Windows 7 and Windows 8 packages were exactly the same, despite what is mentioned in the Wiki.
Anyway, I went ahead and got the package with the Windows 7 compatibility logo as had been confirmed above, and according to SIW it is a 7200 RPM drive. I've been impressed with the SeaGate brand, and I still have a silver 500GB FreeAgent Go external hard drive that has been working flawlessly for several years. I would expect this one to work without a hitch too, and if anything does go wrong, you can just take it back to Costco. Gotta love their customer service, them and Nordstrom.
I bit the bullet and bought 4 of these today. Not sure if I'm gonna crack them open or not. All the ones at my costco have the Windows 8 logo on them for whatever that means. I know these went for $150 on ebay a few days ago, but I was willing to spend 10 bucks more to get it from costco even if it's only a 90 day warranty now. Just less hassle if I decide not to keep any of 'em.
