This dropped down to $120 around Black Friday but we may not see those types of prices again for some time. This is the best price you can find today for a wonderful piece of hardware.

They are coming out with the HDHR4-US and HDHR4-CC in mid-2013, which is probably around June. LINK [engadget.com] The MSRP is supposed to be at $199.99, but that doesn't mean that's what they'll sell at on sale. I got my Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB for around $140 at NeweggBusiness with a coupon a while back. Ceton is supposed to be coming out with an InfiniTV 6 USB, which will probably set the "price per tuner" in the market. There's an ongoing Ceton discussion here: LINK [thegreenbutton.tv] The Ceton rep keeps teasing people, but clearly there is something in development. If the InfiniTV 6 can run 6 tuners on only 1 CableCARD, that would seem like the device to get because it would lower your operating costs for a large household.  When it's all said and done, I think pricing per tuner will be about $30 to $35 per tuner. My Predictions: Ceton InfiniTV 4 USB = $120 Ceton InfiniTV 6 USB = $180 HDHR3-CC = $100 HRHR4-CC/US = $140 to $150 It should be an interesting year in the CableCARD device market, that's for sure. At least that's what I remember from having read discussions on the topic. Whether or not a company like Ceton or SiliconDust decides to actually produce a 6 tuner device is another story. |

Just to add to the multituner discussion... everytime a company adds or changes the way a tuning device works they have to recertify the device through cable labs.

Got one of these at the cheap sale. Only complaint I could say would be that it only gives 3 tuners.

FCC requires CableCards to suport 6 streams, and Tuning Adapters to support at least 4, but most support 6 anyways. You don't need Tuning Adapter if your provider does not use SDV, or you have FiOS. 5 TV's in the house with Verizon FiOS and we only pay $3.99/month to connect all 5 of them. Thanks to Ceton InfiniTV4 and CableCard.

For TV on Mac you have to buy ElGato. I don't know if extender funcitonality is enabled in ElGato. CableCard decryption and extender funcationality is built into every copy of Windows 7.
Most new TV's have DLNA support, and if not, there are cheap devices, or blueray players that have DLNA support. And for the first time, PlayStation3 can be use as a CableBox with this tuner. They spent way too much time developing the "apps" where they are a hardware company first. If they really want to corner the market, they need to either buy or develop their own DVR software so that they are not at the mercy of Microsoft. Microsoft has a really good product, but they did not market it, and then when the uptake was a "measly" 30,000,000 users, they decided that it was not enough. Just like they pulled support from the multi-touch screen development that is now widely used in handheld devices. Anyone remember the Microsoft table? That was the first iPhone screen!!! This is what happens when you have non-tech people make business decisions at a tech company. They want instant returns, where it takes time for people to adapt to technology when you are way ahead of the curve. Microsoft envisioned whole house DVR and entertainment system in 2002, and released Windows XP MCE in 2003 along with extenders. No one even thought about whole house DVR, 10 years ago. If Ceton wants to survive, they need to decouple them selves from the Microsoft giant. Perhaps like Google buying out Sage for their Google TV (not the stand alone box, but TV service) platform, Ceton needs to aquire MythTV or XBMC and get it CableLabs certified to have their own platform... |
