I have a 15-year-old Zegna suit in regular rotation, and not only does it have pleated pants, it's double breasted. Still looks sharp as hell and gets far more compliments than my newer "skinny" suit. It's a shame you can only pull off the latest fashions.

There are some amusing comments in his thread. Especially from those getting defensive about wanting to wear pleated pants. Wear what you want. Period. But please don't feign like you have no idea there are fashion trends in this country and elsewhere. It is quite obvious what the trend is right now and it is not pleated pants. The fact that I can still buy a Kangol hat does not mean it is in style. Lol

Wear what you want but be real with yourself. If you like to buck trends or hold on to old styles then so be it.

But getting random compliments wearing something old does not negate the comments of those that have noted current trends. You could wear a toga and someone would compliment you. That's what makes the world go around.

Everyone knows the fashion trend is flat front. I haven't seen anyone deny this. But how important is it for men to follow fashion trends? If you can look good without wearing the latest fashion trend it really doesn't matter. If you are single and trying to attract a girlfriend maybe it matters.

A pant with a subtle and understated pleat looks better on certain body types than flat front and it can also be more comfortable to wear. The pants in this thread are slim fitting with a subtle pleat and look nothing like the stereotypical baggy pants with overstated pleats you generally see people reference when they talk about pleated pants.

I actually agree with you.

As I stated before I am an exec and have my own fashion sense. I go from weird looking Prada casual shoes, to Jordan sweats, to funky Versace, to purple label Lauren suits and basic Zegna. I wear what looks good on ME.

Funny, related story....I was with a colleague that serves on a Board with me. He is a personal wealth manager for folks $10MM and up. As we were chilling out at a function he states " the season is changing so I am going to have to take this suit out of my rotation for a while." I was thinking " are you kidding??"

But the reality is he deals with folks that take fashion and appearance very seriously and he needs to be aware of that fact (as I often do). So fortunately or unfortunately sometimes one has to make an effort to acknowledge trends and appear socially "educated". The same reason most business/social clubs I frequent in major cities have strict dress codes.

But I am a firm believer in wearing what you want. Just be real in recognizing that people do notice. Whether you care or not. It is not always about impressing the opposite sex.

I agree that some will notice. I actually think the tie and shoes are infinitely more important than the pants, women especially look at the shoes. Fashion comes and goes (The ugly brown or plaid blazer will even make a come back) and yes some may have a boss who will notice and the sharp dressing guy will on occasion get the promotion. But for most professionals being the most fashionable doesn't matter as much as being the most qualified. HOWEVER there is a HUGE difference in not being fashionably trendy vs. dressing like a slob or looking like you bought your suit a size too big from Goodwill. Wearing pleats that fit won't make you look like a slob, so most guys don't care.

It cracks me up that EVERY TIME this deal comes up the pleats vs flat front argument takes over the thread. If pleats aren't for you then move on and don't buy them. If you like pleats then buy them and thank the OP for the post or tell us your thoughts on the them if you already own them. Go make another thread on what level executive you are and what your dissertation is on this monumental debate.
