iphone 5: $127 at walmart, $137 at frys, $149.99 at best buy with 5000 reward points
ipad 4th gen: 449 at shoprite, 469 at micro center, 469 walmart

i don't know for sure what apple is thinking but maybe they're trying to increase market share now. they're basically selling commodities now and a lot of people have smartphones and tablets now. is it really worth it to upgrade to the next one? probably not. apple anticipated selling a lot more iphones and based on this past quarter, they had to cut back their orders from their supplier.

The 4th gen is not too bad either at $ 179 refurb at Apple w/ 1 year warranty.

I've seen discounts on Apple products for the past several years. Macmall has been offering discounts for the longest time.
I don't know the specific details, but retailers perhaps offset the lower price by lowering their own margins of selling a single product.
Referring to: "they had to cut back their orders from their supplier", Tim Cook already addressed this somewhat:
“I know there’s been lots of rumors about order cuts and so forth,” he said. “I would suggest it’s good to question the accuracy of any kind of rumor about build plans, and even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret that data point for what it means for our overall business.”


The supply chain is so complex and difficult, you can't assume any specific reason for cutting back on the orders.
