True benefit of the marine is its deep-discharge ability - which translates to a nice increase in runtime when the ignition is on but engine is off.

If you already have the membership and are looking for a basic battery, I'd take Costco over DieHard regular/gold solely on Costco's track record for honoring warranties w/o hassle.

If you're looking for a higher-end battery, I've seen Optima yellow and red tops at Costco, too. And considering all the mixed reviews out there, buying them from Costco would prob be your safest bet. I couldn't find the size I needed (or course) - so I ended up getting two DieHard Platinums. So far, so good - but it's only been a few months.

They suggest either group 35 or 24' the platinum was 35, curious if I could use a group 34 as long as,all the specs equal out, any input on the best place to find a solid answer on this, haven't checked yet but don't quite trust Wikipedia for this

How did you go about finding the right one, just ensured it met the required amperage and that the physical size would fit or is there much more

any thoughts on batteries sold by BJ's and Advance Auto Parts? TIA

You can use a Group 34 in place of a Group 25 or Group 24, but only if there is enough space in the battery tray and around the battery. A Group 35 battery is the same as a Group 25 in size, but the terminals are reversed. Most vehicles that spec a Group 24/25/35 do so because of size restrictions. There are plenty of vehicles that have the battery tray for a Group 34 though, so really it's a matter of just measuring or just taking a Group 34 and putting it in there to test if it'll fit without issues.

If you're buying the DieHard Platinum, the Group 34 is certainly a better deal than the Group 25/35 since they all cost the same regardless of size or specs.

BJs and Costco are ok if you just want a basic battery. Advance Auto Parts sells ok batteries in their silver/gold lineup, very similar to DieHard silver/gold, with similar warranty.


Best bet is usually getting the battery that suits your needs from a place you can get to when you need a replacement. If BJ's/Costco/Sears is nearby, or you have an Advance Auto Parts or other parts store really close by, it can make sense to get your battery there.

All batteries are grouped by their size and terminal location, so you can look at your existing battery (or look it up online), ID the group, and then find a replacement based on that.

Marine batteries have similar groupings, and most of those match the automotive grouping. My original battery was a 34/78, so I was able to buy a 34M (M for marine) and drop it right in.

Put in my Size 35 Diehard Platinum last night in a 97 4runner to replace an aging NAPA battery and it roars. Thanks, slickdealers.

Envious but congrats. Thats what i need as well, i have a 99 Toyota Solara (or Camry Solara depending on who you talk to, but officially its a camry solara) and its a very similar engine to the 4runners, im guessing you have the v6 which is a 3.4 liter if i recall and mine is a 3.0L V6, not that those are the only differences obviously but mine called for either a 24F or a 35, not sure what the F stands for, i need to brush up on the car battery tech, the 24F is always a little cheaper than the 35 but from looking at the numbers with layman's eyes it appears the 24 is better with higher amperage and CCA, i have this feeling im missing something that i once learned and have since forgotten. The 35 platinum is on sale but for 175 vs. 200 and i just cant afford that, i have to put 500 bucks of Michelin Pilot Exalto shoes on her too right now, its been sitting for a couple years because im 26 and disabled and stubborn/stupid and decided i wanted to get off all my pain meds, all my every med, and just stopped going to pain magangement and seeing my doctors and spent the last 2 years just bed-ridden, dropped from 220 to about 135 lbs in just a few months time just because i couldnt eat, anyway i dont know what i expected i just hoped that after a while my body would start being numb to the pain and i'd be able to pick up where i left off when i first got too sick to work and went on disabbility at 22, forcing me to leave me newly appointed position as Manager of a RadioShack store, anyway im sorry i went off on a huge tangent, now that im back in physical therapy and pain management i find myself telling the story alot.....because its the only story i have for the last 2 years time.

A family friend helped me finish the valve cover replacement which i was mid project on when i retired to bed for 2 years so its now running, but i need tires and i bought a new battery at Walmart but it was 100 dollars almost and they've changed their warranty, its 3 years but there is only one replacement and after that you have to buy a new one, ive had pretty bad luck with the batteries, they work well but leave the lights on for a couple hours and its not only drained but cant be recharged, i just stuck with them because of their warranty, so now im trying to find the best replacement i can for near the same price or not much more and Stat so i can return the one i bought at wal-mart.
