I'd rather buy BOSE.

At least the new AudioEngine A5+ is decent. AudioEngine needs to come out with an A2+.

These are really tiny, and some describe the sound as "boxy". For nearfield PC speakers, they're fine, but on the pricey side. If you can handle more room, check out the M Audio AV40's. They are large, but will have a fuller sound. Neither are meant to fill a room (although they will). The issue is that they are monitor speakers, and any off axis listening kills the higher frequencies.

I have these in white and paid $200 for them. Well worth it. These can easily fill up a room with a rich clear and bassy sound.

Also you can hook up a subwoofer to these speakers as well. They have a hidden feature where you use one of the 2 inputs as an output to your sub.

So pity...

I didnt check SD for once and this happened. I've been tailing AE's for a while. Whatever, maybe I am destined to get some AE5+ =))

Can't you buy the Pioneer bookshelves and a cheap amplifier instead and experience the same quality? Pair of Pioneers is $50, so that leaves $70 for a stereo amp.

Not if you are short on desktop space. I really wouldn't want a receiver and desktop speakers in my office. It would tacky....

Yes, you could and you would probably get a more full sound due to the larger drivers. But the A2's appeal is being a small all-in-one package. A plug and play setup that makes it great for traveling, someone with a small desk, someone who is just uncomfortable with passive setup, etc. Bang for your buck, you could probably get an equally good passive setup for under $100 and a better one for under $200. But for someone looking at computer speakers from Logitech, Klipsch, Creative, etc. the Audioengines are a nice alternative, especially at this price.

The actual speakers make the largest difference to the sound quality. There's only so much good source equipment can do with cheap speakers.
