Do yo know GSM monitoring alarm?
Anyone has an experience with this system?I heard of burglar incident where the telephone wire got cut to disable the alarm system. I am planning to install the system with UPS for back up battery. Below is an exsample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biNlrv783WA Thank you! Last edited by thisisjj; 01-28-2013 at 09:19 AM.. |

A burglar shouldn't be able to just cut the phone wire and voilia, that's it. Now, how to install something like that I dunno but I do know that land line alarms are capable of having that feature. A cellular alarm I imagine would work just as well for what you're mentioning. One thing. I dunno if you need a UPS. UPS's actually do go bad. My alarm has a couple battery backups and they're together much smaller than a UPS and don't require an outlet nearby. They last for years and I just replace them when one goes bad (my alarm tells me when one is bad). For example - http://www.powerhousebattery.com/...rw&click=2 |

$40/month monitoring fee is high to me. I would rather put that money into the home insurance instead. I will install this system by myself and don't mind receiving calls from my devices directly. I think it is less complicated and obviously cost less. However, I still wonder how should I report to my local police in case of the real incident. Any ideas? |

I pay $120 a year and it saves me 20% on my home insurance which in turn saves me about $300 a year. So home monitoring is actually a plus. There are a lot of cheap monitoring companies out there. The only ones who charge you $40 are the ones who install your complete system for $99. I think these are the guys I use but there were others I found at a similar price point http://www.watchlight.com/monitoring/ |

First, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER sign a contract with a monitoring company. When you're looking around at companies (look for smaller, cheaper companies in the home alarm section of the directory of your choice), if they require a contract, scratch them off your list and go to the next one. Monitoring company contracts are some of the worst for consumers there are of any industry in the country. They often have automatic renewal clauses that state that unless you cancel your contract between certain dates that your contract will automatically renew. So, never sign a contract with an alarm company.
Second, never pay more than $20 per month for monitoring. Third, make sure your monitoring includes smoke and fire protection. Most of us buy an alarm and monitoring service to protect us from a burglar, but we're much more likely to have a fire in our house than a break-in. Fourth, make sure the monitoring station is UL-approved. Fifth, consider a system that you install yourself. Look into SimpliSafe [simplysafesecurity.com]. Monitoring is only $14.99 per month, no contract, and their customer service is fantastic. It takes about 20 minute to install the entire wireless system around your house. It's easy to build a system that's custom to your particular house and your particular needs. Also, if you ever move, the entire system can easily come with you to your new home so you won't have to re-purchase a system for your new house. Right now, SimpliSafe only provides alarm protection with no smoke and fire protection. However, according to SimpliSafe, they're getting smoke and fire integrated into their systems in the next few months. Use wisely your power of choice.
