Discover It credit card

Most places take discover. Only maybe a few mom and pop shops wont.

As long as you aren't travelling outside of the US. Discover is usually useless outside the US...they say it's accepted in a lot of places, but not really.

As long as you stay within the US, then it's probably fine.

Your MasterCard will be accepted practically anywhere globally. Haven't been to a country where I haven't seen it be accepted.

Discover card is accepted everywhere in China and Japan without FTF.

I was on that page before you even submitted this comment. I'm well aware of where Discover is and isn't accepted.

No I'm not wrong. I've been to Japan, twice, and several other parts of Asia over the years. I said USUALLY useless, and it still is. Cash is king in Japan, and yes you can use it where JCB is accepted and UnionPay in China, but I still generally used my VISA and Amex more frequently.

Some retailers will still look at the card and wonder WTF to do with it, even if they take JCB.

When you actually DO use Discover abroad, then you can make your own accusations. It's fine for a backup card, but not a primary. Always keep a Visa or MasterCard handy.

I just moved out of NYC, and I haven't had many issues using my Discover, and never at a restaurant, car rental, airline or hotel in any event. As was mentioned, foreign acceptance is often tricky; in Canada, I was able to use it for hotel, car rental and gas, but nothing at retail.

I carry my Discover card for exclusive use in whatever 5% Cashback categories are in effect, and cannot recall the last time in the US I was told it wasn't accepted. Been a while. Within the US, my observation has been that Discover now reached a higher acceptance than American Express. In July 2010, they hit 90% acceptance (link) [nerdwallet.com]. So while it's not quite up there with Visa and MC, you might be surprised at just how widely accepted it's become.

The only "issue" I have with the card is that there seems to still be some stigma around it. Some waitstaff told me they associate Discover cards with bad tippers, for instance. But since they don't know what I'll pay with till the service is done, it's not like this has had any effect.

Their balance transfer terms seem to be conflicting. I see where they say no fee balance transfer however under terms and conditions it states


Balance Transfer

3% of the amount of each transfer.

Cash Advance

Either $10 or 5% of the amount of each cash advance, whichever is greater.
