I recently traded the original Kindle Fire in to Gamestop and traded up for the new HD version. If you have the ability to upgrade to the HD, do it. The differences in quality, viewing angles, and overall experience is astronomically different and worth it.
The one thing I did love about the original kindle, however, is that my less than 2 year old nephew could ruff and tumble the crap out of it and it survived unscathed. |

Bummer, I was hoping to pick one up for my son going into high school next year but all around me are out of stock. I bought a refurb last year from Amazon for about $50 more than this (a slick deal, at the time also) and I love it! I haven't rooted or modified mine other than to install a couple of apps directly via the APK (and a web search will yield plenty of advice on how to do all sorts of things to make your Fire work better for you).
Use it for Netflix, web browsing, and of course reading. I kind of hate it for email - maybe it's the way their email app works with gmail - it's just clunky and is OK for reading but not much else IMHO. If you have been thinking about getting a tablet like this, I say jump on it! Especially if the return policy is 30 days as some have pointed out. Give yourself a month to decide if you like it - I really think for $85 plus tax you can't go wrong. |

While the kindle fire is decent for the price (I mean comon, a tablet with these specs for under a $100), the deal breaker is the charger port. My kids have been though 6 kindles all because the USB charge port stops working after a while. In order to get it to charge you need to prop the cord at a certain angle, and over time that doesn't even work anymore. I would stay far away from these honestly
