Obama said, "One of the biggest factors is going to be how the media shapes debates. If a Republican member of Congress is not punished on Fox News or by Rush Limbaugh for working with a Democrat on a bill of common interest, then you'll see more of them doing it."

Maybe because a president using the bully pulpit isn't exactly the same as govt censorship? Or really even very similar...

It's funny how your complaint about "supporting free speech" doesn't extend to the man expressing his own opinion. Obama clearly wasn't calling for the government to prosecute anyone for what they say.

Meh... That one doesn't bother me. I think it dings him more than Fox since it mostly just makes him look thin skinned. Actually I've been surprised how much he comments on Fox. Kind of lowers him just by acknowledging it IMO.

When they tried to cut Fox out of the news pool that was more troubling. Even the rest of the media cringed and pushed back on that one. And some of the pressuring of the FCC around licensing. Like them or not, the government's getting out onto thin ice with the silence the critics kind of stuff.

Obama definitely puts the "Bully" in Bully Pulpit, that's for sure.

That's my argument to show that he hasn't really "attacked" free speech. He may have criticized Fox, but that's a part of free speech, not an attack on it.

I'd like it if, for the state of the union address, he wore a jacket with "fark the draft" written across the back. That would be cool.

Was that statement false? Hell, didn't he even "lose" the first official debate due at least in part to "media-shaping"?

Criticizing someone else's speech is part of what free speech is. Political discourse and policy debate is an especially important feature of the First Amendment. Now if the government took regulatory action to censor or block Fox News or MSNBC, policy debate or not, then it would be a violation of free speech.

What he said sounds about right to me.

It appears as though you don't have a firm grasp of US Constitutional jurisprudence. That or you're desperately seeking for something else to channel your hatred for President Obama.

yeah, but as the POTUS, his reactions to people in disagreement are a little disconcerting.

"Fox News pushes a point of view I disagree with. It's a point of view that I think is ultimately destructive for the long term growth of a country."

They are NOT going to close Gitmo, but people have already forgotten about that broken promise. This administration has been nothing but misdirection. Right now it is all about the guns, and apparently, all Rush's and FNC's fault he is not getting what he wants.

Agreed. he has the freedom to bitch and moan, but every other media outlet treats him like a celebrity and do not question out of fear of public backlash. It's almost like watching E!
