A nice battery backup is what I recommend. You get surge protection, plus over/under volt protection and battery backup which is good to have for a DVR or HTPC.
The one I have is one of the bigger CyberPower units that I got on sale: http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-...s=apc+1500 |

I love this product. Sometimes Monster products are overkill(expensive) but this is well worth it. |

i use a surge protector in front of the 1500 UPS. most UPS only have a 300 joule surge protection so a surge protector in the front with a higher surge protection is even better.
make sure you read the reviews on that monster surge protector - 3rd party sellers are not authorized sellers and void the warranty. what is the joule rating of that monster surge protector? After a lot of research, this is what I bought for myself. Kinda expensive but I like what it brings to the table.

I'd rather get a whole house surge protector installed in the circuit breaker box because it will have a better earth ground than any plug-in protector, and it won't cost much more, even when labor is included, and may be cheaper than a big backup or anything that puts out pure sine waves.
Most uninterruptible power supplies aren't really uninterruptible but just switch to battery power during blackouts or brownouts. The rest of the time they connect the wall AC almost straight to the load, so any surge protection depends on the same kinds of components found in surge protector strips, and sometimes that can be minimal. Do the laser printer or vacuum cleaner test: Plug one of those into the same AC wall outlet as the backup supply or surge protector, and if turning it on makes the computer malfunction, most likely the surge protection is cheap and inadequate. ZeroSurge brand protection will always pass this test. Last edited by larrymoencurly; 02-01-2013 at 01:40 AM.. |
