Alera Complete Wire Shelving Unit w/Caster, 4-Shelf, 48w x 18d x 72h, Black - $65 w/ FS

I got one the last time these were on sale. I identified two minor issues, one is that caster performance decreases noticeably with weight, and it would have been nice if they drilled holes in the tops of the posts as a secure, out of the way place to keep the stationary feet in case you want to switch away from casters. The anthracite finish looks great, better than chrome in my opinion; it was easy to assemble and is extremely sturdy. This is a great deal.

You were supposed to use those feet when you made two waist-high units...one on casters, one on feet. I know what you mean...I had quite a few shelf clips and 'feet' after accumulating a half-dozen or so units. I kept them in a sturdy zip bag tied to one of the shelves. I would be a shame to need them later and not be able to find them. Fortunately, I had so many extras that missing one or two wouldn't hurt.

By the bye, I have two units in the garage with two each wheels and feet. The back legs are resting on the 'curbing' that lines the garage wall. By putting the front legs on casters, I can pull the shelves out for cleaning(a few inches) and I can move the units along the wall as needed. If I had wheels on the back legs, I would lose ~4" of bottom shelf capacity.

For those considering this deal, a half-height unit on casters makes a great project workspace. I have my miter saw on one such unit with one shelf of scrap lumber and another for other storage. If you go crazy with these, you could have 5,6,7 shelves in one unit but maybe only two or three in the other. They really are quite versatile. The TV in the W(rec)k Room is on one of these units so it can be moved easily for the rare occasions that I actually use the BowFlex.

That's actually a great idea and it never occurred to me. Oddly, I have two sets of the 4 high Sterilite shelves in a 5-3 configuration, and didn't think of applying that customization to the Alera, especially your idea of a rolling work cart.

I just threw the extra shelf collars they give you and the stationary feet in a bag and tied to the shelf like you did; it just looks kind of crummy. It really is a nitpick though; these are great for the money at this price, even with tax. Buy.com have a warehouse right down the road so I received mine in one day.

My dedicated 'work bench' is plastic shelving similar to Sterlite(36x24) set up with three shelves,,,four units wide along the wall. That left me with enough shelves to replace the original shelving in our 44" wide garage cabinet. Gave us ventilated shelving and freed up a few inches of tall space for long-handled items, etc. Felt weird putting pre-fab shelving units INside a cabinet; but DW is very happy and it has worked out well. Beats storing paint cans on MDF shelving with no front support!

By the bye.2...I made sure my strongest wheels are on the rolling cart set-up. It gets moved more frequently than the others, so the wheels see a bit more action. Also, the easier the wheels can turn, the better, Moving the units on carpet or a woodchip laden shop floor is a recipe for wheel disaster. Once the threaded stem of the wheels starts to bend, I don't believe there's any turning back! On that same point, new owners of these type units should make sure the wheel assembly is threaded ALL THE WAY into the post. Otherwise, it is much easier for the threaded stem to start bending. No reason to wrench-tighten the wheels, just make sure they snug up against the bottom of the post.

I got these last time and just bought another. They are really nice and have helped organize my total wreck of a basement. I actually was trying to buy a similar shelving unit at this price these past few weeks- but you really just can't find anything that's this large (48w as opposed to 36w). A lot of shelving units are also 12d at this price point.

Anyway---highly recommended and didn't think about using 1 set as a half-shelf. I might have to get another...
