no hints on what the final price might be?
I'm not familiar with mass drop. Doesn't head-fi get together occasionally and buy 'phones?
After the Grado SR-80's these would be my best cans.
I've been reading that "battle of the headphones head-fi thread and it's pretty interesting. For a young guy, he has a hellua collection collection. Mines the same size, but I'm a lot older and they start with the Grados and go down from there. ..
It's been a fun trip though.

Reason: forgot to add..
HiFiMan lost credibility as soon as they released $500+ digital audio players that don't measure well and butcher the sound.
I understand you have interests and motivations as a business but putting a stop on a one-time group buy is heinously anti-consumer. I mean as little offense as I possibly can when I say that I hope you stay afloat in this declining (albeit notoriously high-margin) market peddling overpriced superfluous audiophool products to the shrinking userbase of frivolously rich, deaf imbeciles.
Better buy an amp and dac to "unlock the full potential" of your 35 ohm headphones that couldn't possibly be driven by any modern media player.
Fang at Headdirect/Hifiman would be shooting himself in the foot if he was going to undercut his distributors. Totally reasonable for Justin to check with them to see what's going on.
I don't see the issue, there's 551 votes for the HE400, let's say only 250 of them actually order. How many units of $400 headphones do you think distributors get at a time? If they can get wholesale prices then why can't we on reasonably large orders?
I personally have one from Mapletree Audio and would sleep with it if I could figure out how that would work, but its a bit pricey if your not rolling in it.
The Little Dot MK3 or 4 (also being voted on in massdrop) is a great value choice, and well regarded if it matches up with your intended cans. If mass drop doesn't end up selling them, you can also get them direct through eBay.
A headphone under $100 that performs as well as the HE-400 or HE-500? That is 100% false. Or did you mean "that do as well (as Dr. Dre Beats)"?
Yeah, I'm assuming he means the Beats. You can easily do that. HE-400? That's worth a chuckle. Although he mentions using a $200 preamp....amping Beats is going to do absolutely nothing. Don't they take batteries for that crappy pre-amp inside that does nothing but hiss and add artifacts to the music? I couldn't even understand how someone would get fooled that they were high end when I demoed them. They sounded weird/artificial/unnatural...and not in a good or interesting way.

I either wrote that really poorly or you guys are taking it way out of context. You would need a $200+ DAC/AMP setup for the HE-400/500s to get the most out of them. If you're playing them out of your iPhone or whatever, they're going to sound like crap.
