Saws like this are really "accessory" saws. You use them for doing something small, like cutting a small diameter pipe, or notching a 2x4, or in tight spaces where a normal reciprocating saw can't get..

If you try to run one of these 12v reciprocating saws like an 18v or corded recip. saw, you're going to have a bad time.

At my shop we have about 25 sets of 18v Dewalt drills/ saw-zall, impacts, lights all using dewalt even a mini vacuum which is really nice.


The only problem with Dewalt is after about 2 years you will need a new battery especially if you use them heavily and keep your drills with batteries in your truck and it gets hot/cold all the time, not too terrible though but its cheaper to buy a new set with the batteries.

I think it likely has some niche applications like BigJ2078 mentioned. I think if you were going to use a recip for any extended period of time it make sense to just use a corded. But, in many cases this will get the job done when you only have a couple of cuts to make. Even with an 18v recip, the power difference between it and a corded one is huge.

Price showing $279 for me, DEAD?

I have the 12v max 1/4 drill/driver and it is an outstanding piece of equipment. Strongly recommend it.

This is misleading. Li-ion batteries don't lose capacity with discharges. Even if you never use the battery and it sits on the shelf you'll need a new one after a few years

Yea the 18v batteries tend to last about 1-2 years for me too. Rather than buying new sets I've been rebuilding the battery packs with SubC NiCD or NiMH cells off ebay. So far the packs rebuilt with NiCD seem to outlast the ones with NiMH. The NiCD are cheaper too. Generally about $25 shipped for 15 cells, which rebuilds one battery. Soldering them all together is a PITA though

I didn't say they lose capacity with discharging.
But they do with charging. Most cells charge to 4.20V/cell with a tolerance of +/–50mV/cell. Higher voltages could increase the capacity, but the resulting cell oxidation would reduce service life. Hence charging a battery above it's tolerance will happen with a dewalt speed charger shortening it's life but at the same time giving you the extra juice as fast as possible when on the job.
