The appendix has some important information that was used in the new Hobbit film series. I believe there is also important information pulled from The Silmarillion.

You really need to read the series about three times to get a clue as to what's all happening. There are so many character and place names that it is tough for it all to sink in on the first go round. I think the books get progressively better up to The Two Towers, but The Return of the King gets a little boring in my opinion.

Well, I am sorry you feel you now know everything LOTR has to offer because you've seen the movie. FWIW, Christopher Tolkien, J R R Tolkien's son who worked a lot on Tolkien senior's works, hated the movies. From an interview he gave a few months back in which he says ""They eviscerated the book by making it an action movie for young people aged 15 to 25," Christopher says regretfully. "And it seems that The Hobbit will be the same kind of film." This divorce has been systematically driven by the logic of Hollywood. "Tolkien has become a monster, devoured by his own popularity and absorbed into the absurdity of our time," Christopher Tolkien observes sadly. "The chasm between the beauty and seriousness of the work, and what it has become, has overwhelmed me. The commercialization has reduced the aesthetic and philosophical impact of the creation to nothing. There is only one solution for me: to turn my head away"."

Edit: Not to take away from what you said. I think that person up there in a fool to believe he got everything out of LOtR (and Tolkien's world) by watching the movies. But I was also a kid who read a lot. I read all four of these books in less than three days (a feat of endurance I probably could not repeat today, lol). |

Sweet! I'm in. That's a great price and cool box to go with. Thanks. |
