Great books for anyone. I know a lot of people who read these when they were 7 or 8 so don't worry about age recommendations. Little kids will be able to get through it if they love reading.
I recommend the The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition (Hobbit not included though). It has heavy glossy paper and great cover art. Besides, Tolkien always intended for LOTR to be a single book .

for instance, did you know that galadriel is elrond's MIL and arwen's grandmother? the books have much more depth that the movies.
but if it's been over 30 yrs since you read the book and you see the movie, you might be inspired to read the book again. ![]()
john carter, anyone? i read that book too and when i saw the preview i could immediately tell the studio it was going to bomb just from the title alone. i read that book in the early 80's and when i first saw the *john carter* the first thing that popped into my head was john carter aka noah wyle from ER. i was like wha??? who the hell is going to know the same author wrote tarzan and maybe the story could be good?they were just following standard sneaky movie industry procedure, but this time they possibly screwed themselves by being wise-guys. All reading is boring, that's what I meant to say. I've never yawned more than reading every day for my college degree. Reading is yawn inducing... which means I will be taking a nap shortly. Now give me a link to an audio book of all four books and NOW you're talking. Because at least I can multitask with an audiobook... go on slickdeals and not miss any deals while listening to a story. I'm good at that
Remember to share the love! Give Reps to both the OP and the deal.![]() |

maybe it's just the genre of what you are reading that is yawn inducing. it's ok if reading the book is not for you and you'd prefer to just watch the movie. just don't make blanket statements that books are a dying format. they are just evolving to e-books and produce offspring like cartoons, movies, halloween costumes, electronic games, action figures, etc. and they are important sources of ideas for many of the movies, tv shows and springboards for careers. almost no chef on tv gets there w/o publishing a cookbook first. considering the hobbit was first published in 1937, i think it's very far from dead. i think it's still kicking-ass over 70 yrs later. |

I'm buying this one - we already have the hobbit and I was looking for exactly this! |

Someone on the first page posted an Amazon link to some Plyometric jump boxes. Funny joke.
I just wanted to add, to be helpful as opposed to funny, that if you search Google for "build your own plyometric jump boxes" you can find a variety of simple plans to build your own. I built a set of 3 boxes last year that are extremely durable for somewhere between $25-$30. The Amazon ones listed were over $200!

Fellow Sd'ers please see Killendino's post above, which I refuse to replicate because it is the stupidest comment ever made in the history of slickdeals, and make note of how to completely hijack a thread. Then NEVER ever commit the same atrocity. |

Do these books explain why there was one movie for each of the three LOTR books, but three movies for the one Hobbit book? It seems to be some sort of geometric problem.
I was going to take my son to the hobbit movie until I found out it was 1/3. Now I'll just wait for the box set. Stupid. No reason why they couldn't have made one movie out of it. |
|
seeing it made me want to read the book again to see how true to the story it was and if they'd left anything out. which i'm sure would happen even if it had been in 6 parts. it's extremely difficult for a movie to do a book justice but maybe by making the movie longer they can get more of the details and character development in. |

But a lot more happened in LOTR, yet they managed a pretty decent mainstream storyline in 3 movies. A lot less happened in the Hobbit, yet they need 3 movies to tell the story? We all know why there are three movies: money. I'm frankly not sure if I want to spend 8 or 9 hours watching it in movie form when I can read the book in that much time... |

The books are way better than the movies. Much more detailed and paint a more lucid picture and tells what's going on in the background.
A lot of people don't understand why the Uruk-Hai got slaughtered at Helm's Deep at the end of the second movie when they had such a huge advantage in numbers. If you read the book, you'd know that the Uruk-Hai were a mix of Orc and man. Orc's can't go in sunlite but crossing them with a man enabled them to survive. Still, they were weakened considerably by the first rays of sunlite as Gandalf lead the Rohirrim down the mountain and slaughtered them. If you didn't read the book, you wouldn't understand this.

I was in India not too long ago and saw a very cool edition of The Lord of The Rings. It was a boxed set divided into 8 books.
Each volume of each book was turned into one separate book, resulting in 6 separate books, plus the appendices was one entire book and there was one more that I can't seem to remember. In any case, I thought that was a very interesting way to divide a book and it would make for very easy reading indeed. Has anyone seen anything like that here? Rep unto others as you would have them Rep unto you.
