As a programmer, I actually like having horizontal real estate more than vertical. I don't often need more vertical viewing area for text editing, but horizontal real estate for multiple tools/processes is useful to me. For me, It's less eye strain looking left and right to view logs, output, profilers, etc than it is to shift my eyes vertically. It really all depends on what suits you as an individual.
Edit: And for some reason my eyes refocus more quickly when shifting left/right than up/down. |

I agree, the monitor doesn't provide any any additional real estate over those monitors. My point was aimed more toward not disregarding the value of horizontal real estate in my line of work. That being said, I can think of a peer or two above the age of 50 who could appreciate a monitor of this size with this resolution.
In addition, my work office happens to utilize an "Agile" desk which fits two 19" 4:3 monitors configured horizontally. This is also a compatible replacement for two 1280x1024 screens which originally worked in the space with height restrictions. |

If you look at the screen from far away, so you are unable to take advantage of the pixels, well, that's your own fault. But, less pixels will not give you any more workspace regardless of how much closer you look. Please try to understand. |

If you've really never noticed this before, go into your screen resolution settings and set a different one. Your computer probably is already set to your LCD's native resolution so you'll need to decrease it. You should immediately notice you have far less room to display stuff. Feel free to look at these excellent screenshots of two different resolutions at the same scaling percentage. All computer screens have similar PPIs, with 27" 2560x1440 having the highest, but still very close to this 29" 2560x1080 screen. "Optimal viewing distance" should only be a few inches apart, and won't be a problem for the majority of people. 1024x768 [imgur.com] 1600x900 [imgur.com] Can you honestly not see the extra workspace available? Here's another example Maximum height of an Excel window on a 1080 vertical pixel screen. [imgur.com] Line 45 is the last one visible. Maximum height of an Excel window on a 1600 vertical pixel screen [imgur.com] Line 76 is the last one visible. Looks like my MOAR PIXELS!!!! lets me have MOAR WORKSPACE!!! My 30" screen and 27" screens are at the same distance my 23" and 20" screens they replaced. Last edited by petard; 02-01-2013 at 08:26 AM.. |

Thanks for your opinion, unfortunately you're assessment is completely incorrect. I adhere to an 80 character rule because my peers and I often use non-GUI editors and we try to have respect for each other in that regard. The horizontal space is usually used for additional windows (output, profiling, logs, tools, etc). As I said before, this is really a matter of personal preference and I don't suggest that a physically wider monitor is the best choice. I'm only suggesting that there are programmers, like myself, who regularly utilize screen real estate in this way.
