So do you guys it will drop even more then with the new lens coming out?

Awesome price, I've been eyeing this forever, it had a price hike a couple of years ago to the +$430 (it's been sitting at for a while). In for one.

Don't know if they always do, but I did have to pay return shipping to B&H around the Holidays. I bought a T3i camera from them and afterwards got in on a D5100 w/ 18-55mm lens YMMV Staples deal for $385... so I returned the (unused/unopened) T3i. There were no issues and they gladly took the return back, but I did have to pay for the shipping.

I hope Amazon price matches!

As long as they don't charge you the actual shipping fees when they ship out the item to you (if the product had free shipping originally, then that's the difference I was talking about)

They are very different lenses, really. F/1.4 vs f/2.8 is a full 2-stop difference, meaning you can get 4x as much light with the Sigma version.

You get the 40mm because you are looking for a lightweight prime that performs well from f/2.8 on. You get an f/1.4 lens because you are shooting indoors a lot or in other low-light situations, or because you shoot a lot of portraits and want the depth of field.

Also, I don't believe the 30mm does full-frame, so, that would be a consideration for some

the goal on a cropped sensor camera is to be as close to 50mm as possible and this lens is perfect for it 30 * 1.6 = 48mm... going to 40mm pushes that away a bit and the real killer is the f-stop which is 1.4 (gets you super bokeh) vs the canon's 2.8 which still does get you bokeh but without the WOW factor.

for all these indoor shots, the lower the f-1.4 will give you better pictures in low light compared to the 40mm f2.8 that you mentioned which should do well outdoors.

I owned the 40 but on full-frame. Wonderful lens. I wasn't a believer at first but the sharpness is pretty stunning even wide open. AF isn't the fastest but I took it on vacation as my main lens and did not have a single shot out of focus, which is a first for me.

That being said I wouldn't buy the 40 for a crop body because it would be an odd focal length. The 30 would be a much better. Downsides would be softer images and out-of-focus shots from time to time, but on the upside, being able to let in 4x as much light and better bokeh.

This will mount on full frame but I believe you will see severe vignetting.

Also, I'm betting the new lens with the dock will be $500 easily, so I don't mind sending the lens back to sigma for a one time fix for the focusing issues

FYI. The reason for this price drop is that Sigma just announced a new version of this lens. It is a new design. 9 elements instead of 7. It looks like improved AF (one of the only negatives you read in reviews of the current lens is that the AF can be spotty) is the main thing. Also, closer minimum focus distance and thus greater maximum magnification. There is also a new USB connectivity feature that allows you to make some adjustments to the lens. I dont know if this is available on any other lens yet, and it would require buying a dock of some sort. How much this adds is questionable to me at this point.

That said, its still a great deal and Im considering pulling the trigger. The new lens will probably be at least the msrp of the current one which is 70% higher. A hefty premium.

And is it free to ship it back for focusing issues? And are we allowed to send it back as many times to fix the focusing issues within the 4 year warranty period for free?
