I got refurbished Canon 35mm f2 for $205 from Canon store whey they offered 20% discount during Christmas. My camera is 600D. Is this sigma better than Canon 35mm f2 for $90 more. I am thinking of getting this and sell canon on CL. Will I be able to sell canon 35mm f2 for $200. Canon works on FF which is a plus considering we might see FF body prices coming down. Sigma is only for aps-c. Hoping Amazon to PM this such that I can use gcs.

The Nikon isn't better, both are excellent. But the Nikon is guaranteed to work out of the box, while the Sigma quite possibly will have focusing issues that require you to send it back to Sigma (at least once). So it's a bit of a gamble.

Much as I love the Nikon, I'd take the Sigma at $290 vs $200 for the Nikon.

On a crop (I believe Pentax is 1.5x like Nikon), the 40mm would have been equivalent to 60mm, and this 30 would be equivalent to 45mm.

If you have a zoom lens, throw it on, and see how much of a difference you'd find between 30mm and 40mm (you could probably do this with an 18-55 assuming you have one).

Also, don't underestimate the f1.4 aperture

You can't go wrong for the price. It's $250 shipped on Amazon (Pentax / Samsung only). Get it and sell it on craigslist for a profit if you don't want to keep it.

Keep in mind they're both crop lenses, the Sigma at $290 is a very nice deal. Much nicer build quality, and f1.4, which is faster than the Nikon.

Not that it matters, but I believe the Sigma is made in Japan, while the Nikon is made in China. Both have a 5-year warranty, and I believe come with a bag + hood. The Sigma's case is actually very nice.

Just bought one! Thanks OP. I realize sigma is releasing a new one, but for a beginner like me, this is an awesome deal. $500 for a lens is well over my budget. Even at $300 it's going to be hard to justify the purchase to the wifey.

I'm going to make a few assumptions which may or may not be correct, but let's assume Sigma doesn't have warehouses full of these, and let's assume the replacement will be more expensive.

Hopefully, you could always sell this one at a very small loss (or even a profit) if you change your mind or decide to get something else.

Of course, if Sigma has tons of these and the price stays this low, or the new lens is priced similarly with far better optics, then resale might be more difficult.
