It's been many moons since I've been to Hawaii. Got it on a deal for ~$350 round trip from the east coast. I didn't think price in Hawaii is really that outrageous. Of course things will be more expensive, but if you learn to spend like the local, it's not that bad.

I got hotels thru priceline which is a gamble but I never try to spend much in hotels as I only use it for bath / sleep as I'll be out the rest of the time. Got a crappy place in Maui, but awesome place on Kona (one of my favs).

Food wise I don't just go to all the big name places. I ate at McDs (they serve SPAM!), shrimp truck, L&L Drive-Inn (seems to be popluar), Food Court at mall in Honolulu (went twice cause the food was cheap and good) as well as some of the bigger name places.
