Are there any deals for CPUs without stock fans?

I got one last week and those push pins are impossible to get in on my MOBO. If I had known I would not have bothered getting one. I think that might be the reason these are basically free. I might try cutting off the push pins and adapting it. I would give this deal a pass

yes but the push pin mechanism is hard to install. Instead of screws, you push the pins down, which spits the plastic prongs and holds he cooler in place. Problem is, when you push one in, another one pops out so it takes several attempts to do it. After having to spend almost an hour to install one. I will never buy another push pin cooler again.

Make sure the pins aren't rotated to "release" mode.

well i messed with it 3 years ago. I tried to keep in in lock position, but it always rotated back after I tried pushing the other ones in. My case was pretty small too so that didnt help. I eventually got it, but I'm just saying its better to spend the extra money and get a cooler with a backplate.

Comes with MX-2 thermal paste, I believe... and you don't want thermal "glue" - use thermal paste

Thermal glue is for applications like video card memory, motherboard chipsets or voltage regulators where the thermal material also secures the heatsink because there is no other mounting method (no pins or clips).

arctic silver 5 is the "standard" for thermal paste

unless you have an oem cpu and want a cheap fan... these look pretty crappy. don't expect much improvement over oem fans

if you want decent cooling, spend a few bucks more and get a cooler master 212

I find it's easiest to do the CPU and heatsink install before mounting the motherboard. Or, just get a $10-15 cooler on sale that has a backplate and enjoy something quieter, cooler and better.

Picked up all 4 of these. When I examined them, the build quality appears very good.

I know, we cannot compare them with CM's Hyper 212+ or some of the nicer CPU air coolers, but for free, I am kinda happy I got em'.

Still thinking about simply using the fans for extra air flow and then selling the aluminum at the recyclers for a handsome profit!

I believe these fans can be modified to use inside a computer case. There appears to be enough plastic to drill some holes and make a special mount [see pic].

Or, people could remove the top shroud that the fan connects to by separating it from the bottom mounting portion, and then this fan is easily modifiable for use as a case fan [see pic 2].
