I own a DS411+ii, which lacks hot swap support, but it works. There are lots of really neat features in DSM, especially for the co and prosumer. For tech heads and those coming from a certain background it may appear to be lacking in some areas, likely due to the underlying architecture (Linux). For instance it doesn't support shadow copies/previous versions on shares created from the NAS, like the ones created when installing Plex or iTunes Server etc. Just in case anyone is interested, here's the DS412+ Product Page on Synology's site [synology.com]. http://www.synology.com/products/...2B&lang=us Last edited by Phylum; 02-01-2013 at 11:15 AM.. we use this salvage feature at work everyday. it's time to move away from Novel. not until we can find something similar like salvage in Novel. we are aware of microsoft salvage but we will have to run a microsoft data server. |

The Synology has a Time Backup [synology.com] feature but that may not be appropriate or sufficient for your application(s). I ended up creating an iSCSI LUN on the NAS and and connecting from my Windows server. After that Windows treats it like a regular drive, which includes System Protection, giving me that oh-so-helpful feature.

Why is that? I think both companies are respectable. I have tried both, and to tell you the truth they are really similar in features and price. QNAP has a really good hardware build and im really digging the new HD station feature. |

I have the 413 and its fantastic. Use it everyday. Not worth the extra $100 for this version IMO, unless you're a business user. Remember the encryption speed boost is just for files that are encrypted on the drive so no one can access them if the device is stolen. The speed boost does not apply to encryption over the net. I can stream video content to 4 different rooms simultaneously with the 413. I also use it for backing up photos and software/files. Love the fact I can access it remotely if I need to. Can also share photos with family over the net. Has a native iPad app that shows the meta info in a very slick UI. The list goes on. Only real negative is the price. Its way too high, bordering on a rip-off..... When I opened the box, I nearly had a heart attack. This things feels like a plastic piece of junk. What you're really paying for is the UI so think hard about how you will use it. For me, its fantastic. Also, customer service is non-existent. The forums suck and the search function is horrid. Just an FYI. You're on your own setting this baby up.
