Follow the money trail and you will find the reason everytime.
Microsoft has seen the future and its tablets. They sold desktop users down the river in hopes that they can establish Windows to be the defacto os for the future tablet market. The thought they they will lose to Apple or Google because they were late coming out of the gate is the reason for Windows 8. So because of this, Microsoft is going to try and ram some silly stupid mouse touchscreen hybrid on me? To top it off they are going to try and tell me that I am better off and more productive using this hybrid over decades of the old way? Hey Microsoft, don't p*ss into the wind and tell me it's raining! At least Apple is not trying to shove an iPad interface on all their desktop Mac users. |

They farked that one up badly because a lot of the complaints of having to find something every time you need to do something you've done before could have been stifled significantly. |

"Enter" is like the left-click, in this case. These are basic commands that should have been learned early.

Again, back to the 4 Cs, Continuity, Control, Context, and Conveyance. The basics of a graphical user interface. He clearly spells out why Windows 8 actually goes backwards in these 4 categories. Do you believe that he is incorrect, and that Windows 8 is superior in these 4 categories beyond Windows 7? Or do you believe he should see the value in Windows 8 because it is important to Microsoft that people adopt a touch-screen interface that will be used on their tablet products, and thus, should be important to him as well? |

I PIN EVERYTHING!!! Even in Windows 7 (which I'm using now) everything is right where it should be and meticulously separated into folders of things of the same category. I don't think I'll have a problem making that happen in Windows 8, but I could be wrong. |

I installed win8 on my HTPC (from windows 7) last night just so I could use my MCE key that I did not want to expire. I had been previously running it in an virtual machine.
Observations: 1. Keyboard shortcuts are your friend, they'll make you a more powerful user with windows 8 2. It's quicker than windows 7 on some tasks 3. I feel in some ways it has taken more control of things - good and bad. 4. Start menu is a minor annoyance at first, but then it isn't a big deal at all. 5. Drivers and install even more polished than windows 7 I'm neutral on it overall, it does what it does and serves the HTPC function very well. I'm not sure why people are bashing it - its close enough to windows 7 that the hate is probably unjustified. It's also probably close enough that it might not be worth an upgrade for the few benefits it offers. Anyone use the windows 8 phone? I thought that was kind of cool - desktop, laptop, and phone all be the same interface... makes a lot of sense to me. And I'm an iphone 5 user (who still admittedly loathes apple) |

Like always, there is no need to upgrade if you don't like the interface. There are tons of guides for how to go back to Windows 7. In fact, Microsoft still supports Windows XP until April 8, 2014. How much more can a company do to keep it's user base happy?? For those complaining with the "if it ain't broke..." excuse, Microsoft is not in the business of sitting on a product forever and needs to innovate to stay in business. Innovation and change only happen when you challenge the "But this is the way we always did it..." Last edited by BilboFraggins; 02-01-2013 at 10:18 AM.. |

For someone who has been a power user for most of their life, Windows 8 is an incredibly frustrating experience. It shatters old conventions and gives the user no guidance as to what the new convention is. To run the command prompt with administrator privileges (something any power user has to do frequently) I had to switch to desktop, open an explorer window, browse to Windows/System32, and right click on Command Prompt to give it elevated privileges. In Windows 7, the command prompt is two clicks away from the environment I start on. I see Windows 8 in much the same way that I saw Vista: the back-end improvements are manifold and worthwhile, but the front-end is sluggish and inelegant. I shouldn't have to install 3rd-party apps to emulate the environment I've been working in for the past 20 years. If MSFT is really out to switch the interface entirely, Windows 8 SHOULD have been a transitionary OS, with full Windows-7 desktop functionality along with Metro. That would have let me handle my power tasks easily while acclimating to the new way of doing things. And don't even get me started on the UEFI / Secure Boot fiasco. |
