For a 500GB drive, you also gain some more life over the 128 and 250 GB models. On the flip side, if you plan to do a lot of data transfers on this drive, it might not be the best option.

Sequential write speeds affect computer use in such a small subset of cases. Typically the 4K random read/writes matter a lot more, as do latency, etc, and sequential reads.

How many times will you be transferring large distros onto this drive? Also are you sure your SSD will be the bottleneck in those transfers or some other equipment (network, etc)?

I thought the 840 would be crap (I bought the 830 a few months back) but after reading the Anandtech review and looking at how it performs, I think the 840 is a great SSD with superior performance to the 830 in most use cases.

You speak truth! I just skimmed Anand's understanding TLC NAND [anandtech.com] and I'm much less hesitant, particularly because the drive has a 3-year warranty (+1 with AmEx), and I think by that point I will surely have moved to replace it.

Honestly I just rationalized the purchase. I'll use this drive for PC Gaming (Helloooo again Steam), and nothing else

Awesome! Been keeping a look out on this SSD drive for a few weeks now. Cheapest I found was $320. Now with this price and my eBay 10% coupon which they sent me today in my email it came out to be $270. Now I can upgrade my new laptop.

I love the way people obsess over specs. Yes, this drive is ONLY 330MB/s for sequential writes. So it's like > 3 times faster than a regular hard drive. For copying files, it's faster than almost anything you are likely to be copying from. Heck, this is even fast enough to record UNCOMPRESSED 1080p 60Hz video (though you'd only fit about an hour of it before the drive was full). For 99.9% of people (and you can probably even add a few more nines in there, but I'm being conservative), I really can't imagine what source you will be getting your data from where you will notice the difference between this and a pro drive. The worst most people are probably going to see is maybe like an extra 25ms delay when saving a game or something.

But by all means, please obsess as if it means something

I'm not worried too much about the speed, but the longevity of the drive because of the way that the capacity for TLC drives is achieved (i.e.: higher voltage, which reduces the lifetime of the chips). I only pointed out a single downside because I don't want to TC, and it's still a great price. On top of that, I've already finished checkout with mine!

Its a good price. But in reality you dont need such a big SSD. I have Samsung 256 SSD and i use it to boot OS plus running games from it. The rest of data (MP3's ,movies, etc) is on secondary 3TB internal drive plus 3TB USB3 external drive. It cost more then 50% less (for 256GB version) and does the same great job. I'd recommend getting 2 drives for this money - 256SSD and 3TB USB3 or internal drive.

What a steal. Too bad I have a 128gb Crucial M4 in my system. :/
