download a vm for malware testing
Does anyone know of a web site that offers VMs for malware testing or anything else for that matter I can build one but would rather just download one. I am testing a new rescue CD and it is in the testing phase so I really don't want to use my PC and I would like to have a VM that I could install malware on to see how well stuff gets cleaned up?

Doubt you can (legally) download a preconfigured virtual machine due to licensing issues with the OS.
If you're into the warez scene, I know for sure you can find .vmdx files that are already good to go. If you refer to your husband/wife as 'DH/DW', you're too old to be active on a forum.
If you ask for marriage advice on a(ny) forum, you should seriously reevaluate your life. If you don't know the difference between 'their', 'there', and 'they're', I automatically assume you have a mental disability (same goes for to/two/too and your/you're/yore). |

I have ultimate and TechNet so I can do it was just hoping to find one already done probably just wishful thinking on my part, but I should have done it a while ago, I mean how much fun is it to create a vhd copy it then trash it with viruses and malware then see what will clean it up.

For the sake of simplicity, when I want to do a similar project, I make an image of my OS, then go ahead with my testing.
If I trash the system, then I stick the image back in, which takes all of 13 minutes on my PC. I've done the VMware thing with Win 7 Pro and XP, but it's a lot of work to get it all just right, and on top of that, I want to do my experimenting in Win 7, not an old OS like XP. Maybe my way of doing it doesn't suit you, for some special reasons, but for me, it really beats going the VMware route. |

funny part of my job at work is cleaning computer but my company really does a pretty good job between 2 firewalls pretty good email scanning and very robust anti virus and firewall on all the pcs so that not much gets thru, so yes I clean employees computers, and my wife's friends and co- workers, I look at it as a fun challenge the same way people play online games. I need to figure out which tool and method I need to use to get the system cleaned up. Most of the time I win sometimes not, I lose if I have to just pull the data off and reformat. |

I love battling a good virus/malware. The only weapons I use are Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, an Anti Virus program (usually AVG or Avira) and the Unlocker program, so that I can delete a file that is otherwise, undeletable. I always get my man, but there are times when the amount of residual damage is far too great to bother trying to get it all back in order, so then comes the format and reinstall. I've been telling my friends and clients to do a hard kill, the minute they come under attack, then contact me. Most of them do just that, and it's an easy job to clean up. Those who continue to use the computer for days, until it's unusable, make the job that much harder and sometimes impossible to fix, without spending weeks on it, and those are the ones that I invariably have to do the format and OS reinstall. Putting the fun aspect aside, if I were in your shoes and I was to maintain a bunch of computers, I would set all the computers to make a Windows System Image, once a day, or twice a week, then I would advise all the users to let me know immediately, when they come under attack, and then I would stick the previous image in, a job that takes less than 20 minutes, unless there's a ton of data in there. |

for work we store our data on the server and the policy is just to reimage the box, but where I work on a military base they usually want some level of forensics done to see if it is a targeted attack or just run of the mill malware. I did get call from corporate security about my laptop being infected, they took my hard drive and I never heard anything back?

So what is the plan? To infect the heck out of an OS and test the rescue disc? Is this a rescue disc you made yourself? (if you don't mind me asking) |

no I am doing testing for a vendor thru centercode
https://www.onlinebeta.com/signup/default.html?sid={AF636425-3CBF-4232-B910-83B31AAA0032}&cid={33F06A81-5110-4BDB-AF8C-2486E89107ED} they are 100% legit I have a very nice NEST thermostat, along with other free stuff and Amazon gift cards. anyone who wants to sign up is free, they test all kinds of stuff, telephone apps actual phones, keyboards, games, remotes you name it. The hardware I have always gotten to keep, software too, sometimes you get amazon gift cards. Very worthwhile but you do need to invest the time to do the work. I can't mention the test they are doing now but they are looking for people who speak Spanish French or German it sound like a really nice test too. |
I wish I had more spare time to do things like that. |
