I was thinking to pick a couple of these up as I have several unused Windows 7 keys laying around...but then, these two statements in the review made me run quickly in the opposite direction!

The Android 2.3 environment is nearly unusable and often freezes completely.

While the ViewPad 10pi attempts to be the jack of all trades, in reality it's just one big headache.

Sounds like a fun toy, but I don't know what I would do with it. For it to be practical as a tablet, it'd need to run Windows 8. There will NEVER be Windows 8 drivers for the GMA600.

The Windows 7 drivers will work, not sure if there needs to be a lot of tweaking to get other drivers working or not.

I couldn't find any videos of this tablet running Windows 8. However, I did find a few videos of other Z670 tablets running it. Performance should be similar.

It can't play 720p videos, not in Windows 8 anyway. Probably playing any HD video is out of the question. Just a guess, but based on video performance, I'd say games won't be great on it either.

Maybe it'd be better just to stick to Android for tablets. I don't know, I'm definitely itching for a new toy to play with. I'll sleep on it and see if it's still in stock when I get up at noon tomorrow.

Highly unlikely. Almost all roms come from a base operating system from the manufacturer. Thus if the manufacturer has only released 2.3 there is little chance there will be roms higher than that. The problem is finding drivers. There are of course exceptions like the htc inspire 4g which got ics because the htc one v is practically a hardware clone and had ics so developers ported the drivers.

I believe in the end your best bet is to stick with android for tablets. Windows 7 is a great operating system but much more suited to mouse and keyboard and 2.3 will seem prehistoric.

Well I can tell you that when the manufacturer says max 4 hours of battery life the battery life is not going to be great. Performance should be very similar to all atom single cores because the architecture has not changed much since the introduction. In my experience a single core atom is pretty rough especially without a true gpu like the ion

Who builds a tablet with 2 cameras and no microphone? That's a huge drawback.

Windows 7 can function very well as a tablet OS, and has so for years now. Companies like Panasonic, Lenovo, and Fujitsu have written software that greatly enhances multi-touch and digitized pen use on their business and rugged tablets. I doubt we'll find similar quality software available from viewsonic.
