I have been looking for the best deal on a Windows tablet and came across these guys on Viewsonic's factory store:

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Tablet - $299
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...-10pi.html

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Ready Tablet - $149
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...no-os.html

Viewsonic must be blowing these out, because the cheapest price I could find for the $299 version with Windows 7 pre-installed is $499.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-V...ewpad+10pi

I was able to buy that $39.99 Windows 8 upgrade special from Microsoft before it expired yesterday and was thinking about using that to do a clean install on the $149 version of this Viewsonic 10pi. That would give me a Windows 8 tablet for under $200.

What do you think? Does anyone know of a better deal out there on a Windows tablet?

One of the amazon reviews says not upgradeable to win8. Is this still accurate?

"I bought this in anticipation of Windows 8 because along with the product Amazon included the deal for the special price for Windows 8. I wanted to get the device and upgrade it to Windows 8 when it was released about a month later. WRONG!!! As of this date this device IS NOT UPGRADEABLE to Windows 8. The Marvell AVASTAR network controller device does not have a Windows 8 driver. I contacted Marvell and they have no immediate plans to upgrade the driver for Windows 8."

Can't find a good review, nor evidence that anyone's gotten it to run either Android 4 or Windows 8. Either of those would make the $149 version a steal. (You end up with either a dual boot win 7 with Android 4 or a cheap windows 8 tablet). I'm going to assume there's almost no development on this one though...

Since it's a single core atom, it seems it's a crappy Android and crappy Windows. The worst of both worlds.

Aside from the processor, this thing has the perfect of everything else that I would love at this price... screen size, resolution, memory, RAM, ports, etc.

Hands on not kind.

I'd guess it was that review that sunk this tablet. It was pre-production and the reviewer just couldn't get used to the buttons on the side (rather than capacitive buttons on most android 2.x devices). I agree the atom processor is the limiting factor, but $150 for a good (not great) resolution touchscreen, 64gb SSD, a perfectly useable word processor and web browser, and the possibility of a bit of interesting development seems worthwhile to me. If anyone can find a user review please post it here.

the reviews are based on the retail price at release $500+
at this price, it is a different story
