I have been looking for the best deal on a Windows tablet and came across these guys on Viewsonic's factory store:

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Tablet - $299
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...-10pi.html

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Ready Tablet - $149
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...no-os.html

Viewsonic must be blowing these out, because the cheapest price I could find for the $299 version with Windows 7 pre-installed is $499.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-V...ewpad+10pi

I was able to buy that $39.99 Windows 8 upgrade special from Microsoft before it expired yesterday and was thinking about using that to do a clean install on the $149 version of this Viewsonic 10pi. That would give me a Windows 8 tablet for under $200.

What do you think? Does anyone know of a better deal out there on a Windows tablet?

There are a number of instances of this wifi dropping thing and posted fixes/workarounds in this thread, depending on your situation.

I sure as heck won't be using the onscreen KB to write code... I was thinking about getting one of those keyboard covers that someone mentioned in this thread.

I do see myself sitting in a coffee shop checking FB while sipping a macchiato, getting a call from work, then whipping out a KB to ssh into my dev server Smilie
Hahaha, I programmed on a Nexus 10 for a little bit by ssh then using vim but I didn't like it too much. I've been spoiled with dual screens for too long..

Tatiana, give the guy a break. He is probably a CIO or at least an IT manager.
Smilie If I had to guess, I'd say the majority of his income this week is going to come from reselling those 4 tablets he just swooped in on from this thread.

Ah, I have to go to bed now. Tomorrow, SDers.

And again, wrong. Good thing you're not a bookie. You'd be broke.

They'll be used in a retail store to tag into our sales system by our salesmen. It's a perfect application for us at a dirt cheap price.

I ended up picking up a few of these. The thrill of the hunt and all. Now what to do with em?

Here's what I did to get them. Pretty much every single time C4C sang "changes" I've been able to get at least one order in. Sometimes two. One quick and one slow. They actually don't sell that many. Yesterday when it was available for 3 mins, I got one order in within 5 seconds of it becoming available. I got another order in 3 mins later. The difference in order numbers was 7.

Have 3 tabs open.

1) Tab running C4C.
2) Tab with your log in name and password prefilled out. Viewsonic will time you out after a while.
3) Tab with the checkout box all prefilled out with CC et al. Ready to purchase.

When C4C detected a change, I hit "buy now" to add it in my cart using tab 1. I then hit login with tab 2. Finally I hit purchase in tab 3. I woudn't even wait for the pages to load after clicking a button. Just wham, wham and wham. Took about a second.

To get to the purchase screen, add anything to your cart such as the $299 one. That will allow you to get to the purchase screen so you can enter in all your information such as the CC number. Then go back in another tab in the same browser and delete that item from your cart. You'll then have an empty cart ready to accept the $149 10PI when C4C detects the change. The purchase screen will buy whatever is in your cart, not what you originally put in it to get you to that screen.

travfar, you are getting several tablets which do not interest you.
I wonder why.

Oh, got it: you are trying to protect us uneducated souls from getting really bad, bad, bad product. You are saving SDer's money by sacrificing your own.

applauds. kisses. Happy St. Valentine Day!hugLMAO
Cut the guy some slack, Bagira. It takes a big man to admit that he's wrong, and travfar comes offering ordering advice as well. Welcome to the darkside, travfar, now we can all laugh at other hater trolls.

He didn't say he was wrong. He grabbed several tablets using well-known C4C trick, and now he does not know what to do with them.

Took the advice of others in this thread and popped windows 8 on this tablet. Can't believe I was about to settle for 7. Windows 8 runs as well as I need, and I'm not having any of the issues others mentioned in this thread, except one... The top 1 centimeter of my screen does not consistently respond. Using a touchscreen visualizer I can see there's a space between the very top (essentially the top row of pixels) and about a cm down that does not always respond to keypresses. Frustrating because that's a pretty important part of the screen... Anyone have any suggestions? I'm pretty sure this was happening under windows 7 also, so I'm guessing it's a hardware issue. If it's a matter of tightening a cable, and someone can tell me which one, I'll crack this thing open tonight.

Does the freaking GPS work for you in Win8? Or you didn't check because you don't care about GPS?

Well, good question. There is a new driver from Proficient (windows 8 actually had a pop up, and included a link to the download). I installed, then installed control center, and I can say that it can be turned to "on" but I haven't actually tried using it (no software). Know of an easy way to check to see if it's functional?

Also, I know google isn't supporting windows 8, but does anyone know if there's a google 8 app from a 3rd party available?

Is Bagira and his alter ego Omeleria spewing again? Dude, do yourself a favor and put them on your ignore list. Look at their posts. Have they posted one thing that was even remotely useful? Well... other than the entertainment value. I loved it when the self appointed expert on this tablet Bagira was shocked when ARM based Android apps wouldn't run on this x86 based Android tablet. He proclaimed it like it was a revelation. He's always good for a giggle.

Put them on ignore and your signal to noise ratio will rise drastically.

Viewsonic has an app on the CD, however, it is kind of lousy.
Try this: http://download.cnet.com/Easy-GPS...71271.html
MS Streets and Trips 2013 will do to, if you have a copy.

I have not. It basically would just hang on boot when it gets to "saned disabled; edit /etc/defaut/saned"

I did some searching on it and there wasn't a definitive answer that I found as to what it is failing to load, but a couple threads talked about the video drivers.

I have not spent much time troubleshooting since.
I didn't look through your conversations throughly but I guess that is the same problem I experienced. In conclusion, I could install only opensuse 12.2. xfce and LDXE were a little sluggish but usable compared to gnome. I believe that is mainly because of the lack of a proper video driver.
I have tried to install several Linux distributions, crunchbang 11, linuxmint 14, ubuntu 9.04 so on but all failed.

There is an interesting post that says adding 'vga=792' in the boot option makes X11 work but it didn't work for me. link to the post, http://forums.debian.net/viewtopi...=5&t=71166

W/o GMA600 driver all your Linux installs are a failure waiting to happen, unless you don't really need a good video performance and want to use it a server or something. Which would be a shame.
Pretty good photo frame, too laugh out loud
