I have been looking for the best deal on a Windows tablet and came across these guys on Viewsonic's factory store:

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Tablet - $299
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...-10pi.html

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Ready Tablet - $149
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...no-os.html

Viewsonic must be blowing these out, because the cheapest price I could find for the $299 version with Windows 7 pre-installed is $499.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-V...ewpad+10pi

I was able to buy that $39.99 Windows 8 upgrade special from Microsoft before it expired yesterday and was thinking about using that to do a clean install on the $149 version of this Viewsonic 10pi. That would give me a Windows 8 tablet for under $200.

What do you think? Does anyone know of a better deal out there on a Windows tablet?

There are a number of instances of this wifi dropping thing and posted fixes/workarounds in this thread, depending on your situation.
Care to make a short summary here? Sorry I just do not want to go through this long thread one by one again. I first used the the WIFI driver from CD, and updated it with the one from WIKI. It was working ok, but not stable. Then, I did the window update with even newer driver, man, wifi is even worse. Now I can not even go back to the ealier version even though I tried uninstalling the driver. Thanks.

I doubt this will pan out but I am willing to buy any extra tabs that are not wanted for $170. I don't have time to be running c4c all day.

I'm starting to suspect that the Linux kernels that ships with Ubuntu 12.04 or 12.10 do not come with the GMA600 driver (either as loadable module or compiled-in). Seems that the driver is still marked experimental, but I have no way of verifying that it's included unless I can see the kernel config (or locate the module). So, it looks like we may have to recompile the kernel from source. I may have to tackle it that way if my suspicion is correct. Or, you can try to find precompiled drivers that work for whatever kernel version ships with whatever Ubuntu release you've installed.

For folks who have not done kernel recompiles before, you may want to start learning how to do that now if you want to have some chance of successfully running Ubuntu on the Viewpad 10pi. Otherwise, stick to Windows since it's the path of least resistance.

Note: I do not have my Viewpad yet so what I said above is just an educated guess.

"vga=XXX" only sets the VGA definition that GRUB uses during boot-up, and only affects the framebuffer resolution. Once X11 kicks in (during the boot sequence), it will try to load whatever driver is needed for your particular video card.

From what you described (sluggish performance with LDXE and xfce), it sounds like openSUSE 12.2 doesn't ship with the gma600 driver either, and X11 is probably using generic fbdev or VESA. You can try to find precompiled drivers that works with the kernel that openSUSE comes with by default, or recompile the kernel from source. Either way, it's not going to be a simple set-it-and-forget-it.

P.S. I didn't realize that openSUSE is now at 12.2. Gahhh, I'm getting old Smilie The last time I used SuSE (yes, the acronym was like that originally) was when it was still at release 7.1. I still remember buying a box containing a whole bunch of discs, some thick manuals and a sheet of stickers - my favorite was the gecko sticker!

I didn't look through your conversations throughly but I guess that is the same problem I experienced. In conclusion, I could install only opensuse 12.2. xfce and LDXE were a little sluggish but usable compared to gnome. I believe that is mainly because of the lack of a proper video driver.
I have tried to install several Linux distributions, crunchbang 11, linuxmint 14, ubuntu 9.04 so on but all failed.

There is an interesting post that says adding 'vga=792' in the boot option makes X11 work but it didn't work for me. link to the post, http://forums.debian.net/viewtopi...=5&t=71166

Thanks. Found a way to go back to earlier version. I just used the one from CD to uninstall and then install again.

Using Win7 - After some testing, I found quite a few times the app buttons/icons are insensitive to touch, such as Chrome/Sumatra PDF. Guess Win8 is better in this regard. Not sure it is the app developer or it is just the OS limitation.

Here is a free app called TurboGPS which can be used for GPS testing: http://www.turboirc.com/tgps/

- download and install;
- in Viewsonic Control Center turn GPS on;
-Start TurboGPS;
- Go to Tools, select GPS setup. If you installed BT and Intel chipset drivers, it should be COM8, otherwise it is COM5.
- Click OK.
- In Tools menu select "Connect";
- In View menu Select "Satellite".
Wait a while, better outside.
If TurboGPS shows some satellites, your GPS is up and running.
When satellites color changes to red, you have a fix!i

Actually, it is pretty nice app. Select Google Live Position from Tools/Features menu, and it will show you your position on this planet. In Google Live switch to Satellite or Hybrid view, zoom in to the max and you will see your house in 3D Smilie

Has anyone managed to run a successful windows experience index. It seems to crap out and blue screen during the "Tuning Windows Media Decoding" stage for me.

Thanks for this. We have to have a GPS receiver (through USB) in order to have this function work, right?
