I have been looking for the best deal on a Windows tablet and came across these guys on Viewsonic's factory store:

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Tablet - $299
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...-10pi.html

Viewsonic Viewpad 10pi Windows 7 Ready Tablet - $149
http://www.viewsonic.com/us/table...no-os.html

Viewsonic must be blowing these out, because the cheapest price I could find for the $299 version with Windows 7 pre-installed is $499.99 on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-V...ewpad+10pi

I was able to buy that $39.99 Windows 8 upgrade special from Microsoft before it expired yesterday and was thinking about using that to do a clean install on the $149 version of this Viewsonic 10pi. That would give me a Windows 8 tablet for under $200.

What do you think? Does anyone know of a better deal out there on a Windows tablet?

I will admit that the Windows 7 installation instructions (link on the Viewsonic page for the $149 model without a Windows OS) are well written.

Regarding installing the upgrade version of Windows 8 on a drive without another version of Windows...my one experience is that it will install but will not automatically activate. I installed the Win8 Pro upgrade version onto a new/bare SSD on my desktop after removing the problematic hard drive running Windows 7. Win 8 installed but would not activate. It took a phone call to Microsoft support to get a special number code to get it to activate. The rep was helpful and polite. I can't recall if he asked for my Windows 7 key.

Urgh, why am I tempted by this? With all the reviews and logical reasons telling me to back away, the tinkerer in me is doing happy dance about the potentials...

Fine, challenge accepted!
+1 me too, even though I have more than enough toys and know that this will result in hours of pain, late nights of lost sleep and ultimately a struggle to finally flip on Craigslist. In for one!

The ViewSonic ViewPad 10pi was announced here at CES, and according to the company, it'll be in retail stores later this month. This is a scary proposition. Sadly, our time with the tablet was filled with glitches and frustration -- as is, this dual-booter seems entirely unfit for the market. The Android 2.3 environment is nearly unusable and often freezes completely. ...we had decent expectations for performance within Windows. Unfortunately, even web browsing was generally unsatisfying. Pinch-to-zoom and scrolling were both rather choppy, and -- as much as this comment pains us -- we longed to return to Android. ...While the ViewPad 10pi attempts to be the jack of all trades, in reality it's just one big headache.

I want to, but all logic is telling me no. Specs/reviews seem scary... Passing. If Engadget is saying run... I'm going to listen.

Good luck on those who do buy it!

Hmmm.. Should I waste $170 for junk like this? It'll probably sit out of my room since i have ipad and nexus 7. Or should i save money to get surface tablet or win8 tablet??

Pass. Would rather pay an extra $180 and get an iPad Mini.

Can this be used for remote access? I need to access my HTPC from time to time, and this would be a great way to use this tablet if remote access is accessible on this.

Or even if you don't want to pay double, there are plenty of better tablets for around this price.

You can use any tablets to remote access any pc with teamviewer or splashtop.
Edit: due to specs given, you can expect lagging when doing remote access.
