I've ordered quite a few TD gift cards with my rebate cards. and they never did a pre-authorization. They always charge the full amount immediately like Newegg does.

Unless I'm misunderstanding this, here's one that I did on 1/27/13.

Every time I placed an order with a gift card where the value of the order was less than the amount of the gift card, it asked me for a credit card in order to go to the final order submit page. Did it ask you for a credit card when you placed that order?

If not, they may have changed their ordering system recently.

If so, that's perplexing because myself and several other SDers have had issues placing orders because the system rejects the order. It even sends us to the Order Confirmation page and sends us an Order Confirmation e-mail. That doesn't matter... the order doesn't actually go through.

I've done this at least 3 other times, but thinking about this a little more, I do remember that on one of these orders, they did put a hold on it. I had to call TD in order to get it released.

Even though I've been successful in the past, I will heed your warnings for future orders. With the peculiarities of the TD ordering system, I'll just consider myself lucky and won't chance it again.

Yeah, they have some strange things going on with their ordering system. I was having issues at one point where my orders (paid w/ Discover Card) would be "Pending Review" until like 9 am, which is an hour after TigerDirect's offices open. It was problematic because TigerDirect doesn't ship orders in the order they are received.

So... if your order gets stuck on "Pending Review", then when it finally is approved by the "Order Verification" department and goes to the warehouse, they might have already ran out of stock on the item. A couple of my orders went on backorder because of that and some were cancelled because they couldn't get any more of the particular item in stock.

If they removed the credit card requirement before you get to the final order page, I think that's what was causing the issue. However, like you said, its better to be safe than sorry. I've never had any issues with an order where my order total was above the value of the gift card (i.e. partial CC payment), for what its worth.

I ended up using my GC to buy $1 more of smaller valued GCs. You can actually order TD gift cards for values less then $10 by searching for the item number and adding it directly to your cart. A $9 GC would be item number TD-GIFTCERT-0009.

I tried it last week (blue fan?) and it didn't exactly work.

My first order was a gift card. I used a GC for more than the amount and didn't select my CC. It showed a payment type of open account and eventually the order status went into account over limit. I'm not sure if it would have shipped as I canceled it when my second order was eaten.

The second order was probably for a fan. I use the GC and selected my CC. It showed a payment type of CC and seemed to go through at first. I did get a confirmation email but clicking on the order in my account gave the invalid zip code error. When I called them they couldn't find an order with the number I gave them. Fortunately I also placed a backup order in case this one didn't go through.

Btw, if you are calling the Phone # on the back of the card, you might want to start off the conversation by saying you would like a refund/check for several prepaid cards.

Usually, the representative will ask you why, and then you can tell them you are sick of having a million cards lying around and its hard to keep track of all their balances.

If you get a good rep, they might suggest consolidating the card balances onto one card. I've had a few reps suggest this, and I did take them up on it a few times.

It's beneficial for AMEX to retain your prepaid card, because they charge the merchant a % just to run the card... plus they stand to make money if you don't use up the full balance within 6 months.

Of course, if they are a jerk about it, you could always tell them you just want a check. This will take approximately 20 business days to arrive and you'll want to make sure to get a Claim ID # at the conclusion of the call. Do not let them off the phone without getting one. If they say they'll call you back in 24 hours with one, tell them that you would prefer to wait for them to process the request.

Whenever they say they'll call in 24 hours, they never do, and usually that's when the refund request isn't completed. It's happened to me a few times, just wanted to save you the headache.

I've had this happen to me except that they mentioned calling me back 2-3 business days. They never did and now my question is do I have to call them and give them the card numbers again? Since I never received the claim number I assume they are not going to mail me the check.
